New player feedback

I recently bought the game and I really enjoy it. The early game seems to go quite well. But there are a couple of tech's that make for a jarring change in gameplay.
1. Sweepers - Obviously we love the chaff. But it does seem a bit odd that a single squadron that drops 10 chaff is all you need to totally negate the cylon's missiles.
2. PCM missiles - Sort of the opposite of sweepers, you get a single shot chaff every few turns. I tried it once and never used it again as the damage output loss was too high compared to the every 2 or 3 turn chaff cloud.
3. Nukes - wow, I held off getting these but now that I do there doesn't seem to be any point to anything else. 1 nuke typically kills or fatally wounds any ship. And the Cylons have no missile defence, so the biggest problem is making sure my nukes don't take out other nuke missiles nearby. Frankly the biggest problem with nukes is that they make friendly fire problems very obvious and painful. I have lost multiple ships from firing a nuke that then hits a nearby friendly ship that was in the flight path. I haven't finished the game yet so perhaps there is something to balance out nukes, but they really seem vastly overpowered.
Oh, am I right that chaff does damage to you if you move through it without shields? I have had some odd damage from nowhere that seems to fit with chaff movement when shields were wiped out.
