Paths & Tracks + switching commands

Sorry I haven't found out yet - is the "paths and tracks" terrain type the same as clear terrain or different? If the latter, what are its effects?

The manual says you can move a unit from one command to another, but how do you do it? Apparently there is a "Switch command" functions somewhere but I haven't found it yet.

Also, I read the instructions, but it's still not clear how to move a general from one unit to another.

Done the three tutorials; terrain choice is terrific! Still think it stupid that a light unit can be sitting behind the rear a heavier unit and just has to sit there drinking tea or something like that, can't even shoot into the enemy rear. Romans are hard enough to beat as it is.

This is the terrain situation as I understand it.

tracks are non-open terrain types. If you mouse over any square, it will say whether it is "open" or not. Open is the key word here. A lot of shock cavalry rely on being in "open" terrain for PoA boosts. However tracks do not count as "rough" terrain types which typically disorder heavy foot, elephants and cavalry. So its sort of an inbetween.

Functionally, it means that you can use tracks to protect infantry from shock cavalry or atleast rob them of PoA that they normally would get big bonuses. Heavy Infantry are at home in tracks as they do not rely on "open" terrain and simply don't want to be disordered by rough terrain (and eat a big combat penalty). Most medium infantry can also use tracks to help protect them vs Heavy Infantry since most medium infantry have negative penalties when testing morale if they lose combat vs heavy foot in the open and fragment less easily.

Just remember that it doesn't disorder the heavy foot or the cavalry, it just takes some of the edge off their capabilities. They won't be crippled like they would be in rough terrain.

They are exactly the same as open terrain. This means that a track through a forest counts as open terrain. They do not cancel Open Terrain Only POAs.

This only works at deployment time. Select a non-general unit and mouse over a unit from another command and the switch command icon will appear. (See manual for what it looks)

Select a unit and mouse over another unit and the icon appears. Sub-generals can only move to another unt of their own command. C-inCs can move to any.
