HYW English Longbowmen question

I'm going to be doing a HWY English Continental army for my mediaeval FoG army. I'm not sure how to paint the Longbowmen.

Should each battlegroup have a uniform appearance, or would each individual bowman have his own non-uniform appearance? In other words, should all the tunics of BG1 be the same, etc.?

Thanks in advance.

I would suggest a not exactly uniform appearance. OR give the men a piece of cloth wrapped around their left or right arms. The cloth should be the same colour for all those wearing them. OR paint up enough bases the same for a BG. Do another/more BGs the same way. If you desire you can move the minies/bases around....mix and match the minies.

I painted all of mine differantly.

While I am sure that some lords had a group of archers on the payroll I went for the majority being your average guy with a bow.

I 'uniformed' mine for 2 reasons.

So I could use them as WOR.

And so I and my opponents could tell where 1 BG ended the next began!

Would oh, unit standards, banners....something the unit's men could have come up with, be okay to use here and there?? Is there any proof it was done? The books I've seen are along the lines of darn little "local history on a unit level".

I think so - The Lance & Longbow Society (who probably know about these things) sell a great line of Freezywater Flags for both HYW and WOR.

And they look good.
