Weather effects?

I just finished "Burma Road" and noticed that it was raining during the final battle at Rangoon. Was this just a cosmetic effect, to indicate the monsoon season has begun, or did it have any mechanical effect? If it was a mechanical effect, is weather scripted or semi-random (as in Panzer General / Panzer Corps)? Also, can we expect weather effects in Panzerkrieg?

-Scott

ps. I have restarted the "Blitzkrieg" campaign and am looking forward to Panzerkrieg!

Oops, I just re-read the produce description (on Steam) and noticed "• A new wet climate type affects the battlefield: units move slower in the mud and dirt roads no longer provide any movement bonuses."

Do any other campaigns or DLC implement weather effects and is it scripted or semi-random?

Just to be clear, that "new wet climate type" quote is from the upcoming Panzerkrieg announcement. It is being worked on in beta and is not part of any previous DLC. Moreover, "Wet" will be a climate type, not a weather condition (your question seems to mix the two together).

Right now, there are three WEATHER types: Calm, Rain, and Snow. These are not random; they are set by scenario designers to start or stop according to a trigger, usually turn number. The consensus on weather is that it is cosmetic and does not affect unit capabilities or gameplay.

Panzerkrieg will introduce a third CLIMATE type: Default and Winter will be joined by Wet. I am unaware of any difference between Default and Winter up until now, but as the blurb that you quoted says, Wet is supposed to slow units down. We will see when they release Panzerkrieg. But as with weather, climate will be a setting chosen by scenario designers, not random.

By the way, TERRAIN (jungle, river, mountain, etc.) remains much more important to unit capabilities and gameplay than either weather or climate.

"Wet" needs to affect at least the Moscow scenario in the Blitzkrieg DLC then !!! The bad weather and mud were part of the reason why the Germans failed to reach their objectives there.

If this feature is implemented into OOB that Scenario needs to be revised from my point of View.

FWIW, I always liked the impact and uncertainty of weather in Panzer General -- especially on the Eastern Front. Snow was terrible for an attacker on a timeline but could be quite helpful after the lakes froze. Clouds and Rain were terrible if you relied on air support but great for the side who lacked air superiority.

Weather should be a factor in all the campaigns & scenarios, not just a cosmetic effect. It was a primary consideration in many instances. I think it should affect the proceedings.

You can use the Random Trigger for weather.

It would be nice if adverse weather like rain or snow affected air operations. Something similar to PzCorps where air units would be grounded and those already airborne unable to attack. And a similar weather-report so the player would have to plan air operations ahead.
Simple, effective and more fun in my opinion.

Has weather still only cosmetic effects?

Yes, except sandstorm.

You can add another LOS column for naval. Last time I tested settings there, only LOS was working.

Ah... too bad. Then I'm not wasting time for chassis... but wait movement limitations do work...? Then what speed is good for?

Looks like canceled coding work as only the LOS settings work. I guess Speed was meant for a general speed reduction for defined unit types during that weather condition.
The data of the chassis-files has nothing to do with weather. These define only the movement costs of climate settings for each movement/chassis type.

Aaa I see. Thanks Horst... I mixed up chassis/climate and weather. I guess it's not cancelled, but not yet implemented.

In Panzer General, I think it was made, weather caused the terrain climate. I mean, it rained randomly, and if it rained twice or three times in a row, the terrain became muddy. Same with snow, I think

So it CAN be modded to have an in-game effect, for example slowing down units in rain or snow. Extremely useful!

Everyone can type something these days, but not read as it seems.

I've tested this again yesterday and nothing has changed about it that only the LOS setting is working in that file.
Got it?
I reported that eons ago, but whatever is not important for whatever official stuff is not important to get fixed. Blahblah. Period.

So the speed setting doesn't work with sandstorms, too? It's really only LOS? Although I seem to remember that sandstorms restricted movement. It's been some time I've played that campaign, though. Alzheimer's...

Im still confused with weather and terrain "climate" setting. Aren't weather supposed to changes the climate setting? Eg. rain should cause Wet terrain setting? Sandstorm should cause Arid?

Unfortunately OOB can't change climate mid-game. I'd love to be able to create scenarios with random shifts of climate; for instance clear <-> wet, wet <-> snow.

Weather's an in-game effect that can be switched on/off during a scen, but the climate's a fixed setting for each scenario.
