In your siuation, just issue the challenge to your buddy ( unless he accepted too many too!) I don't believe there is any cap on how many MP games you can have at one time, you just cant accept too many with x time frame.

there is as far as i know nothing anyone at this end can do on the server side, if you accept too many, some may or could fail, until you finish the ones you have already started
