Well the A/B/C/etc names were just the German designation. The real names were Model 1940, Model 1941 and so on (the "S" is actually Model 1942 Skorostnoy). Ekranami was not a variant per se, maybe "subvariants": there were Model 1940 and Model 1941 units with the applique armor.
I think you could add the KV-8 and the KV-8 Skorostnoy, flamethrower variants. Those variants had a 45mm gun instead of the 76mm.

There was a somewhat heated discussion here some time ago, regarding the KV-1 model 1942 (or KV-1C in German designation). Apparently, Russian sources seem to deny the very existence of this sub-type and our Russian friends even proved it with documents. However, many post-war Western sources (which are mostly based on wartime German evaluation charts) DO diffeneciate it as being a better armoured but slower sub-type. The question looks still undecided as both sides have some convinicing arguements. It started here:

a Russian document showing the different KV-1 (KB-1 in Russian) sub-types and their monthly production numbers, and which fails to mention the KV-1 model 1942:

and continued here, where I tried to draw a conclusion:

interesting.
The Russians did not differentiate the T34 variants either. For them they were T34s built in different factories.
So like you mentioned with the PzIVG, it's probably the same. For them they were KV1s. the Germans made a difference (A,B,C) in designation with new guns and more armor bolted on.
Also, concerning the PzIVG, game like PzCorps should make a difference between early and late version. As 50mm of armor vs 80mm of armor makes a big difference. So we should have 2 PzIVG in the game, early and late version.

I think that the Panzer IVF2 and the IVG are, in practice, the early Panzer IV G and later Panzer IV G.
It's interesting how the people who made the things don't always get to name them.

According to Jentz (encyclopedia of German tanks of ww2) Ausf.G with additional armor (80mm total) became available on the 20th of June 1942. Starting at 16 per month from july to november 1942 half of the ausf.G received the additional armor. in 1943, all ausf.G received the additional armor. Early ausf.G is identical to ausf.F2 with improvements being made throughout the summer.
In game, when we buy the Pz.IVG in may 1942, we are buying the beefed up production i guess (80mm of armor), but with the L43 instead of the L48. (with the sidegrade starting in march 1943).
So yes in practice the early G and F2 are the same vehicle, we just get to buy the 80mm ausf.G in may instead of june.
