Single player Skirmish progress

Thank you for the game and the many extended content DLC's.
I supported OOB since release day and was hoping since 2015 for a SP skirmish mode.
A few times it was hinted such a SP skirmish was in development.
One of the updates also offers a MP skirmish mode.
Is single player skirmish mode still in progress? Is there another way (mods) for generating random battles?
I think when this feature will be added I see myself play some more years.
