Which battle or campaign does this option refer to ?
Has anyone been brave/foolhardy enough to use two allies ?

As willb noted the option refers to the "Syrian War" between Rome and the Seleucid Kingdom circa 190-189BC-ish.
I haven't tried two allies yet myself. It seems like an interesting option for the right army -- i.e. one where there isnt' a real strong core to the army, or one where you really want to change the character of the army by buying two allies. The big problem with using two allies is that you'll need a commander for each--an FC if you've bought enough troops in order to effect enough of those allied troops--and that can add up.
Cheers,

I play most of my WotR battles with a CinC and two allies...not so much cos I like allied generals or want to save points, just cos I find generals with a bit of a restriction of whom they can command a bit more realistic for these games. The 21" move within a turn I find a bit unrealistic once sir has dismounted in full armour to lead his retainers! I guess on some ancient battlefields commanders did rush back and forth all over the place issuing orders and encouraging/cajoling troops, but I imagine there were just as many occasions where a commander deployed the army after making a plan, took his place in a bodyguard "unit" and did only as much as they did, saw only what they saw and triumphed/fell with them!

I used the Mid Romans with both allies tonight against some Late Carthos.
Having 2 allies in this army did not hamstring the Romans for command, the 2 TC ROmans seemed able to cope with the 9 battlegroups of Romans fielded.
Top honours went to the Aitolian ally, who led his MF Thureos through 2 units of MF IF routing them both.
Fun army with 16 BG deployed.

I don't know anything about the WotR so I wouldn't know about their command style but I think it probably depended a lot on the culture/empire. Adrian Goldsworthy wrote a good book on this called
In the Name of Rome. It mentioned how many generals like Alexander the Great made a plan, deployed his army, and fought along with his soldiers without directing the army after the battle had begun. The book of course focuses on how the Roman style of command was different. The Roman General's job was not to fight but to rush back and forth issuing orders, observing and rallying troops, committing reserves, directing the fight, etc.

I must admit my dbm experiences of allies clouded my judgement, I am looking forward to seeing the Papal Italian list.

Howdy. First time poster here.
I'm building a 15 mm Mid Roman army w/Pergamine ally to face my Successor/Selukids and I'm considdering picking up the Old Glory starter army to handle the Roman part. However, picutres are hard to find, but they seem good enough for the price, so I've got a few questions:
1. Are there any pose variations within the BGs?
2. Are any foot command included in BGs?
3. Are there adequate generals and such to make command stands?
4. Are the figs well sculpted/animated?
Thanks in advance. I'm using spare Essex for the Pergamines.

I haven't purchased the Roman pack, but the other OG packs usually have two, sometimes three poses--generally slight variations. They are a bit taller than Essex, so don't mix well in the same BG.

Deeter to try and answer your questions
1. Are there any pose variations within the BGs?
Yes I have several poses (around 4)in all the Legion BGs so you can mix or group like ones togather
2. Are any foot command included in BGs?
There are foot comand for all 4 Legion BGs but not the Italian alies
3. Are there adequate generals and such to make command stands?
Only problum mine had three mounted officers but no extra mounted to make full command stands with
4. Are the figs well sculpted/animated?
THey look realy nice very animated very clean sculpt They would not mix well with essex on the same stand
The only problem I have is that they included 7 vilites with wolf skin so I need to find some one who has one they want to get ride of to form a full unit
Hope this helps Kevin S

Mark and Kevin,
Thanks for the speedy replies, both very helpful. I won't be mixing them on the same stands with Essex. Those will form the allied BGs so that's not a problem. Will be though to get some figs to round out the generals though, maybe try another line that sells in smaller batches. BTW: my main opponent uses all Xyzston so I'm used to towering enemies. Both look good together though.
