I enjoy this game - I just wish it would work better for me!

I was excited to see the Burma Road expansion advertised...I've really enjoyed playing this title, and though I have yet to get through all the content
produced up to this point, its good to see it continuing to get support.
I find the way aircraft work in the game vastly superior (read: more realistic) to Panzer Corps, along with various other details in the combat mechanics.
I like the game, and find it immersive, challenging, and fun...I really want to "LOVE" it, but just can't.
Because the longer I've played, the more technical problems I've encountered. It appears to be that the size of the scenarios increases...I posted earlier with a question about the Leyte Gulf scenario, and received advice that finally allowed me to run the scenario successfully with the map set to two-dimensional. With that setting, and some of the other graphics turned down, I've managed to make it through to the final apocalyptic invasion of Japan. But it still loads very slowly, and the computer's turns take a loooong time...with it "thinking" for several minutes before I ever see a unit move.
I have to make clear that while the A.I. has been challenging enough to keep me entertained, the main challenge I've faced is in figuring out ways to keep the game running...and that I might well have given up on those efforts a while ago, if I did not like the game so much. Understand that I do not WANT to play with the reduced graphics...I miss the 3D terrain...but I'm doing so in part because I'm invested in the Campaign, and want to see it through to the end in whatever form I must.
Another issue, that is separate in my mind, but irritating nonetheless, is the consistent problems I've had with Multiplayer. This game was recommended to me by a wargamer friend who bought it long after it was initially released. We have been playing games together for years, both table-top and via computer, and were looking for a new title for our digital dueling. We were both impressed, and ultimately purchased every expansion.
From the beginning, we had problems with scenarios we were playing "locking up" and being unable to continue them. That sort of thing often happens when you play games over the internet or email, and we just chalked it up to corrupt files and started new games. But the problem seems to have gotten worse. Its reached a point where I don't even try to play Multiplayer anymore, which is a shame, because we had a lot of fun with it while it was working.
Its occurred to me that the problem may in fact be that my aging computer is slowly dying, though I don't want to consider that awful possibility!
I know that information about my system may be useful to people, but don't know exactly what you need to know, so here's a bunch of info:
I have a Dell PC, running Windows Vista Home Premium, with an AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-Core 2.3 GHz Processor, 3327 MB of RAM, a 32 bit operating system,
and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 graphics card.
Any suggestions you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
