Required movement in charges

Last night we tried our second test game and a couple of questions emerged. I also have some other issues, so I will post my questions separately. I will deal with the one that was most troubling to me at the time.
I had a German knight BG against an Anglo-Irish light horse BG. I declared a charge against the light horse, they evaded a full 7 MUs and I could not catch them even with a +1 MU result on the VMD. We seemed to remember that I was not required to take the additional distance from the VMD; but, despite an exhausting (if not exhaustive) search of the rules I could not find if I was required to charge my full 4 MU distance or not, if at all. We decided to proceed under the assumption that I had to move 4 MUs in the direction of my announcement, but was I required to move the 4 MUs in my declared charge direction or could I have remained in place? (I would have preferred not moving since they were alone and unsupported.) If I could have stayed in place, would there have been a need to take a CMT to remain in place since they were shock troops even though the target was no longer in range?
Thanks for your patience if this has already been discussed. I was not able to find any thread on topic.

BTW - I love the game but until we learn the rules better some of my buddies still want to play a different set that will remain nameless.
