Damaged 3d models

How 3d models switch from "good shape" to "destroyed" ?
I first thought it was just a matter of pasting a ruined version of the model textures (with the same name as the main one) whithin the Mod/myMod/Units/Textures/Destroyed folder but it doesn't work. Maybe this requires some extra modelling in max ?
Is there some modellers over here who could help ?
