legal formations of mixed-troop battlegroups

was just looking at the later danish list and had a wondering. the BG of HW/XB are mixed, and i get the front/rear rank stuff.
so a conventional formation for 8 bases is
HW HW HW HW
XB XB XB XB
but, can a BG be mixed in any way you see fit, as long as the overall formation is legal?
for example:
HWHWXBXB
HWHWXBXB
theoretically you could deploy a few BG this way side by side.
my question though is changing out of this formation. if you move the BG forward could it reform as the conventional formation?

Your "non-conventional" fromation is legal.
You could get back into a "conventional" formation by a contraction as you can move elements contracted into any rank other than the first. A CMT may be needed, of course.

i expect the group could then expand in the next turn to be 4 bases wide again.
thx.
there could be cheesy advantage in a BG half-in/half-out of terrain!

In practice, this situation rarely occurs. Certainly, I wouln't base a game plan around it!

But Hammy would.

I'm looking at this army as well - I think it needs the Xbow armed Cav to have something to skirmish with...
So I guess
XBXBXBXB
HWHWHWHW
is also OK. Might be usefull to storm some rough going against all those soon to be seen Arm,LtSp,Sword MF
I'm assuming this wouldn't be disordered in terrain.....Don't have my rules here but I am wondering how this mixed formation would work in terrain with either the Xbow or HW in the front rank. Only the HF are disordered or??/

the HW would disorder, so you'd end up with 6 dice fighting on the XB's POA.
to be honest in the senario you mention you're better leaving the XB in the back rank and shooting the MF. you get 4 dice shooting so that's all good.
and i agree about the skirmishing cav. except, i like firearms

So HW in front than,,,,but still only the HW is disordered in rough? So 7 total dice in Melee for 8 stands? Still not a bad troop type to take into terrain. Very versitile.
I think I'll see if I can morph my medievals guys into this...need to do some basing.
The firearms guys are cool but I like the earlier period.

ah, good point. only 1 dice per three so 7 dice. maybe not so bad for fighting in the rough... especially versus that pesky MF off spear!

I have used this formation and on occasion it can be handy but I susopect that sticking with the axemen in the front rank is normally best.
