Field Fortification Employment and Protection Offerred?

I'm having trouble understanding protecting BG/Battle Line(BL) with field fortifications [FF].
The rule book FF descriptions are rather minimal, or maybe I'n not getting it.

What defines a fortification:
> What configuration[s] of field fortification [FF] bases constitute a "fortification" protecting a BG, BGroups or a BL?
> Does a BG or BL being in contact with the rear of a single FF base make the BG or BL "in fortification"?
> Are multiple FF bases across the entire front rank of a BG/BL required to be "in fortification"?

Is there a directionality/coverage to FF protection:
> What exactly does "across a FF" mean?
> Protection from charges in the flank or rear across the BG/BL by merely being in contact with a FF base?
> Must a BG/BL be completely surrounded by FF to have 360-degree immunity from charges in the flank or rear?
> Are 2nd/3rd rank bases of a BG/BL protected by the 1st rank being in contact with FF?
> If there are more FF bases across the frontage of a BG/BL than there are BG/BL 1st rank bases, is the frontage of the BG/BL expanded?

Thanks/Cheers

and what value are they providing in trials?

A single POA doesnt seen that great but am interested to see what others are finding.

Generally I'd assume that rubbish troops (mob, poor HF/MF or skirmishers) woudl generally get slaughtered despite a POA benefit. If you put better troops behind them they are wasted, pinned down BGs.

I guess I am wondering whether the 3 points are value or if they might be overpriced.

FWIW the POA is in shooting as well as impact and melee. The other benefit--to my mind nearly as important as the POA--is that shock troops behind FF don't have to take a CMT for charging without orders. Handy.
