Commander purchase?

I'd like a commander purchase option similar to the specialization system.
You get say 5 commander points when starting a new scenario in a campaign and can purchase air/naval/land commanders with varying purchase costs depending on the commander's stats.
And we need many more (historical) commanders.

I agree. More commanders means more immersion. Should be fairly easy to implement in the DLCs after Kriegsmarine.

And the devs could switch to original officer pictures instead of the current painted ones. That should save some work.

Yeah, but that is a copyright issue (maybe) and a design change (definitely). OoB has a distinctive look here and I assume the artist will defend his creation with knives in both hands.
I would prefer a mixture of historical and fictional commanders, the fictional ones for gameplay, the historical ones for immersion.
This is a really good idea, Erik. :D

The first US and JP campaigns have mainly fictional personalities if I'm not mistaken, but the later nations got some historical figures too. Most of the (over-)painted portraits are very well done:

I think all nations, even the minor ones, should have a few commanders. At least one for each area land, air, naval. The Swiss only gets two :D
The nations which have campaigns should have painted ones. And they are really good looking.

If someone likes to replace these painted portraits with photos, the picture files float around in the graphics folder. Shouldn't be a problem to change that by mod, or is it?
I haven't been that busy with graphics yet. I already had to do a screenshot of a unit to create a new attack mode for the FW 190G. That doesn't look that great of course.

There are about 300 German leaders classified and ranked in Gary Grigsby's War In The East.
In addtion there are Finnish, Italian, Rumanian, Hungarian, Slovakian and of course Soviet leaders.
Quite an inspirational list 8)

And then there's War In The West with a similar treatment, adding the US, Britain, Canadian, France, New Zealand, Poland leaders.

Erik do you like War in the East game? Is it brutally complex? I liked Gary's previous game A World Divided but haven't tried their newer stuff.
Guderian in that picture looks like he was having a bad day. Must have been during Kiev encirclement which he wanted stopped and instead head east and all the reinforcements be for him only. I wish he had helped reduce Kiev so more russians would have been trapped and less German casualties.

I played all the WITE scenarios, most of them were good. The campaigns force you to allocate a lot of time, so I never finished any of them. His games are very well researched and you can find a ton of info in the editor on specific equipment and TO&Es.

purchasing of the commanders it would be a very cool idea. Every commander with some unique specification can make that every scenario would be a quite different...

Erik why not finish campaigns? Were you winning or losing? Does it get more complex as the game progresses?
I think Gary Grisby makes very strong AI enemy that is hard to beat. My friend and I played World DIvided against Arsenal of Democracy boosted allies and it took a lot of tries to win as Germany. Then we played hotseat against boosted German AI and won but it was a big challenge to survive for me as Russia.

I simply did not have the time to finish.
