From 'Man on a Pony' back to respectability!

Just a note in celebration of my return to an avatar of respectability!

Just before one's 300th post, one's avatar here is the StuG IIIF. As I mentioned in another thread, I was shocked to be demoted to "Man on a Pony" for my 300th post.

At the time, I thought maybe I was being punished for some forum misdemeanor, or something. :(

However, now with my 350th post, I am back to the formidable Panzer IIIL as my avatar. What a relief.

Maybe now I can slow down and not post as often so as to enjoy this avatar. To others here, that may come as a relief.

I mean, why a white horse? And doesn't that guy look a little too big sitting on it? (No disrespect to the artist.)

Actually, I can imagine that picture on a projection screen in cavalry training camp: "Men, this is a good way to get shot! Don't present a target to the enemy like this."

Anyway, aside from the ridiculous-looking avatar, I did some research (that is, I merely searched Wikipedia like I usually do) and I found out that Kavallerie refers to the Cavalry Brigade of the Waffen SS. This unit was engaged in some very nasty business early in the war. One more reason why I am glad I am no longer a "Man on a Pony."

If you go down that road, you can only play as the U.S. Only faction in the whole mess who made it out mostly without any major war crimes. That includes the Japanese as well. WW2 left no one sparkling clean (except for the U.S., mostly. Better people in charge, I guess. I am not making this up. Fish always stinks from the top, as we say in Germany. "Der Fisch stinkt immer vom Kopf her" :( )
Best leave the whole thing to history and be happy we dont have to fight those senseless battles again. It is a fun game, after all. :D

You should read this book written by a retired Navy Seal. Book is about western front completely from the Germans' perspective. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1267 ... r_the_Ruhr

It gives a lot of details about US war crimes.

Please.....please don't start on one of these conversations.

Speaking as somebody who has been downrange, there are two constants, There is no such thing as an atheist when under fire and there are definitely no angels in combat.

Leave it at that....please

I just want people to know there were no goodguys in WW2, only various parties with selfish interests.
If there had been any goodguys, they would have intervened when Russia was bullying Finland and the Baltics but nobody had reasons to help them.

I conclude that you think the British, Canadians, Frenchmen, Australians, Poles, New Zealanders, Hindus, South Africans and many other nations were war criminals during World War II.
Maybe you don't know but Americans often shot the German prisoners. There were quite a few Jewish officers in the US Army, they liquidated SS men especially after the liberation of the concentration camps.

I totally agree with you.
There is no need to bid who was worse. It is clear that the biggest war crimes were committed by two armies. You can discuss this with the Russians or the Chinese, they certainly have no doubts about what I think now.

Finns and Balts also were not a goodguys. Particularly Balts.

Ooops! This thread has taken an unexpected turn from lighthearted to serious. I did that by mentioning the background of the Kavallerie Brigade.

Well, look. In all wars, there are atrocities on a minor and major scale. No army is entirely guilt-free. The My Lai and Wounded Knee massacres stain my own country's military history.

But I was talking about one particular unit, not the German army or people, so let's not over-generalize. The vast majority of Germans, Japanese and others in World War II were mistaken and misled, not criminals.

Of course you're right, we shouldn't over-generalize but we must know the history very well to utter such controversial judgments as those I read here.
NSDAP had 8.5 million members in 1944.
Have you heard about the massacre in Nanjing in 1937?
Read yourself:

I'm also glad that we don't have to fight each other, and may we never have.

I would like to make two comments here, one on the cavalry, and one on the off-topic discussion:

1. I don't know how you came to the conclusion that Kavallerie would refer exclusively to the Waffen SS units. There were three cavalry divisions of the regular Wehrmacht (1st, 3rd, and 4th).

2. NB: I am not addressing any post or poster in particular here. I agree that we should not derail this thread with a discussion of the various war crimes committed, and which army was worse than others. At the same time, I do not think that sweeping statements like "every army does terrible things" help. Yes, probably every army in the world has committed war crimes. However, the magnitude of those war crimes differs to such a dramatic extent between the various armies, that putting them all in the same box amounts to historical revisionism. 'nuff said.

PS: I would definitely prefer any tank over a single man on a pony :-). And I need to keep posting, because until two posts ago, I had a nice Stuka. Now I have this boring destroyer. Dammit.

Yeah, I had a nimble recon unit. Now a flimsy Panzer II. About to hit rock bottom soon.
