Just curious if anyone has had much experience playing with or against this army from the Storm of Arrows book. It looks like a challenging army to win with. As anyone had tried these?

Two BGs of drilled, superior, armored cav with lance are nice, along with up to thirty bases of unprotected LH with jav, lt spear-- Jinetes would outclass these guys armor-wise but are otherwise similar.

And then masses of LF and/or MF with XB, plus a max of two BG of protected HF defensive spear.

Looks to me to essentially be a skirmish army, though MF with XB deployed in terrain could be very useful.

(Happened to see the 1961 film "El Cid" last night for the first time in a long while--while earlier and fairly anachronistic armor and tactics wise, it was still inspiring and reminded me of this list

I played an enjoyable game with Later Granadine vs Medieval French.

I had the 2 BGs of lancers, 1 of Christian knights, 2 of spearmen, 2 small mercenary MF XBow/Bow BGs and the rest of the army were LF corssbowmen and LH.

The Granadines won by skirmishing against most of the French knights and winning on one wing with the Christian knights and Granadine lancers vs French knights and MF crossbowmen.

It is a bitch to play against for most balanced armies as it is hard to catch anything. However, it will struggle against shooty cavalry armies or those with lots of shooty MF. You might also find it hard to break the enemy army as it takes time to wear him down by shooting and if you go in too early with the shock troops you could get a bloody nose.

I played against a very similar list (Andalusian testers list) in an open competition with Free Company (32 HF, 8Kn and bugger all else). Because of the terrain and our respective deployments, I had absolutely no chance to pin anything down with my HF so I sat in a corner and did nothing. I let my opponent move his LF into position and let him shoot at me for something like 16-20 turns. With bows he required a 6 to hit HA infantry and given I had BGs of 8 superior bases with rear support and generals, he got absolutely nowhere. He eventually got tired of it and moved up his shock troops at which point I charged out and started the slaughter. Unfortunately there wasn't enough time left to finish him off and he got a winning draw because of the difference in size of our respective armies.

It was a frustrating game in some ways but it did demonstrate that having complete ascendancy over your opponent (his shooting, my melee) is not always conducive to clear wins as it encourages the opponent to avoid fighting and causes stalemate. Since then I always make sure I have a more "balanced" army to tempt my opponent forward towards a few tasty morsels as quickly as possible.

I have played around 25 games with Grenadines, and I only loose one game.

I played this army, in the Spanish major tournament and I finished 2nd.


I Think it´s a good army, but it not easy to work.


I have testing all the iberian muslims list, Andalusían, Fanatic Berber, Early Grenadine, Later Grenadine and Taifa Andalusían. These armies, are very hard to caught, and very manoeuvrable. Sometimes you feel nude against armies with lot of infantry, but you can use the terrains to have a chance.


In a tematic competition, I´m sure that this kind of army, it´s a nice option. In Storm of arrows, the most of armies, haven´t got any skirmishers, and you can dominate the match, and shoot easily. You have a lot of crossbows, all the mounted troops can be afraid .

Maybe your list will be the "Taifa Andalusían" list, in this army you can use the Cid as commander of diferent Taifa Armies

That's a good rundown on the Later Granadine. Thank you! When I purchased Storm of Arrows last spring Granadine caught my eye at once. I am definitely looking forward to seeing the other lists you mentioned and Taifa Andulusian is a real possibility for me at some point. I haven't had any experience running skirmisher armies in Field of Glory yet-- I've mainly been playing various Romans, warband armies and Later Carthaginian.

Yes, Granada is the best scenery that I could put in my life.

You can make a big muslim army, and this army can be used for many iberian muslims list.

I´m a lover of the Al-Andalus culture, I have studied the spanish islamic history for several years, and of course, I have joined my two passions (Wargaming and Al-Andalus history).

Has anyone tried this using masses of MF crossbows? Strikes me as being more vulnerable than the LF version as they won't be able to run away from any foot coming to massacre them, but I'd be interested to hear if anyone's made the MF version work.

I used a version with 24 MF XB a couples of times, it work very well only against mounted enemy, if your enemy have good drilled infantry you have a problem.


I deployed mass of XB in the flanks, near the table border, thus you can add the -1 modifier for threatened flank, and could be very effective.

But really I prefer the LF, because you only need 2 hits for test enemy mounted, and you can evade if the things don´t looks fine.

Had a holiday in Andalucia a few years back, very nice part of the world. There's the
obvious Granada and Cordoba, but also some nice countryside - stayed in Las Alpujarras
and Sierra de Cazorla for a few days as well. You can still see the original Moorish
irrigation system in Las Alpujarras - basically a level canal round the valley sides
catching all the water uphill. Memories of row after row of olive trees as well

Truely strange is the castle at Calahorra!

Must go back again some day.
