Sorry for the rather mundane question, but it came up the other night in our FoG "learning group" and the rules on page 23 are not quite explicit enough...

Can a battle group either expand or start out as a sinlge rank of bases... for instance in a BG of 6 crossbowmen, can they all be lined up ( 1x6) to get the maximum amount of shots on an enemy?

Yes.

And (non-shock) cavalry need to be in such a formation to be able to evade.
