I imagine that's an officer with the sword. It's hard to find references, but I did find evidence of at least one Soviet officer sword:

It's probably a saber (curved blade) in the photo.

The Soviet Conscripts are in Dense Forest, which can't be navigated by the Mechanized Carriers that you have equipped your Heavy Infantry with.

This game is subtly nuanced. Heh, try that as a marketing slogan! What I mean is, the interface is relatively simple compared to other games of its type but there are things going on in the background which effect game play and must be kept in mind because they are not obvious. Take this, for example. I knew that certain vehicles are barred from certain terrains, but I never thought of this restriction in terms of the transport attached to infantry units.
