Scythed chariots providing rear support

We had an odd situation in a game yesterday. My opponent screened 2BGs of Scythed chariots with light horse. I shot at the light horse causing a cohesion test and then he claimed rear support from the scythed chariots. Looked at a definition of rear support and couldn't see a reason why they shouldn't get this.

All I know is that being in front of a scythed chariot isn't my idea of a good place to be!

We tried to keep the rules simple by avoid lots of exceptions for specific troop types. This does lead to some minor anomalies such as this, but we think it is worth it to keep the rules streamlined. YMMV.
