'Feeding in' and formation

I commented on this topic in the 'removing bases' thread, but it seems to have been lost there. In the opening picture in that thread, a BG of knights has expanded to its left one base feeding it into the melee. There is no room behind this base for a second base, so it ends in a formation 2,1,1 instead of 2 ranks of 2 bases.

This is not permitted by the rules. Feeding in more bases by expanding is not compulory. Feeding in bases is not an exception to the rule about rectangular formations, so cannot be done in this example.

The rule is a little odd. If the knights had lost a base in the impact combat, they could have expanded the base becaue the 2,1 formation would be legal.

It would be nice to have my opinion confirmed before I have to argue the case in a competition. :)

I agree a 2-1-1 is illegal.

I think you need an answer from one of the authors Roger.

Everything else in the rules encourages bases into combat, wherever possible. But I agree, there is room to expand on the right, retaining a legal formation. In the following turn an expansion could then occur on the left.

It seems pretty simple as Roger explained.

Someone in the way making a desired move illegal is not unusual and I don't see any actual rules issue.
