I bought this game probably misinterpreting some of the sales spiel. My aim was to create/edit my own units of the Northern Crusades 1147-1410 and fight small battles reminiscent of the tabletop games I ran for 15 years up to 2001. As far as I see it isn't possible to do this in Field of Glory. Is there an add-on, or otherwise an alternative game where units and their characteristcs can be altered?

yes you can but with the older version (you can download that for free) that has a very good editor. you can change names, and all the attributes of any unit. to get the image you want you'll have to purchase some of the add-ons (for your needs, it's swords and scimitars and storm of arrows although i'd get eternal empire and decline and fall too)

go to my products
click on download content at field of glory
you'll want to download the 'original field of glory for pc' and patch 1.8.1
