Light Archers in Legionary BG's

The LEGIONS TRIUMPHANT book allows the incorporation of light archers into legionary or auxiliary battle groups. The text says historically these formed up behind the other foot. However I am not clear if this is their mandatory position in said battle groups. Let's say we have a BG with 6 legionaries and 3 light archers. Can the 3 archers be legally placed in the second rank? This would lead to two benefits. First, the archers could shoot all the time instead of just upon enemy impact. Second, legionaries from the third rank could be moved into overlap position during combat thus putting more legionaries in the front line rather than having to move archers from the third line to the front line. I can see nothing in the rules to prevent this and the use of the word "incorporate" doesn't really make it clear whether the archers are limited to the third rank or not.

Thanks, Terry G.

doesn't this mean in melee you will loose 1 in 2 dice from your second rank?

If you have 2 LF in the second rank behind fighting bases yes you will lose a dice. If you have only 1 no.
