Multiple BGs Shooting

We had the following come up in a game at Historicon
X=MF Crossbows
B= MF Bows
C=Target BG 1
D= Target BG 2
Bows are shooting down the page
XXXBBB
XXXBBB
CCCDDD
CCCDDD
So we have two BGs of 6 one of Xbows and one of bows shooting.
Each shooting BG throws 4 dice on their own and has a "odd" rear rank guy throwing a half a dice. Can these be combined and if so what factors do they use and what target do they shoot at?
Would the answer be different if the shooters were all a single troop type?
What if the target was all one BG?

You calculate shooting dice by target BG not by shooting BG.
Where you have a shooting dice generated by troops with differing qualities or POAs you always count the lesser quality or POA.
I had a quick look in the rules to see if I could find this but failed. I am sure I have read it somewhere but I am b*gg*r*d if I can find it again.

Those bases are shooting at differet target BGs so they cannot be combined.

No change

Yes, then they can be combined and use the worst POA.
See pages 93-94.

So does it mean that in case there's only one target (eg : 12 MF impact foot), the number of shooting dice is 9 instead of 2x4 ?
