Painting Normans

Looking around on line I've seen Normans with painted helmets. Is this artistic licence or fact/something the "Italian" Normans did? My Norman army will be the hastings version.
Just checking before I start...

If we believe the norman queen Matilda they are !
The differente "old" colors meens that they was of differente colour at this time... IMIO!
