Hope this photo works - 4th try.

The active player is the Red Knights of the Hospital and the Light Horse. Non active are the other knights and the Mtd. Crossbows.

If the Hospitallers declare a charge, can the Mtd. Xbows do an intercept?

Frank and I had a real problem with this a few weeks back. A very experienced player in Germany said that the LH blocks the intercept zone, so there is no intercept. He tried to show us in the rules, but it is not really stated.

We know that IF there is an intercept there is no evade, so the LH don't burst through the Hospitallers (or are we wrong here?). Frank thought maybe the LH are trapped and therefore dead and the Mtd.Xbows hit the Hospitallers in the Flank, but the solution to this situation is not clearly expressed in the rules (that we could find).

IF there is no intercept because of blocking enemy stands, maybe this could be a clarification to add to V3 to make life easier for the less experienced. For example - A ZOI does not extend through bases that are not being intercepted.

What is the solution and could you reference the rules with your explanation?

Cheers
Rob

P.S. Why won't the picture show?

Hi Rob

Here in the UK we play it that you cannot intercept if there is not a clear path straight ahead so both your own and your opponents BG's could stop an intercept.

I've just checked the V2 rules and the umpire clarifications but cannot see this stated explicitly.

Intercepts can only contact the BG that is charging. Intercepts can only go straight ahead. So no.

P67, first bullet.
the battle group has the option of making an interception charge on the chargers
It doesn't have the option of charging anybody else

Thanks for the responses and help everyone.
The terminology problem we had at the time is that "interpenetrations" is only used for friendly troops in the rules, so the final sentence in dot point 7 pg. 67 was not conclusive. The dot point Phil refers to is not totally clear and requires an understanding that the ZOI must be clear of non charging stands. At the time it was not a clear implication to us - late in the evening and after a hard day at work for both of us.

I think that this issue could be made a lot clearer (for beginners and tired old codgers) with a modification to pg.67 dot point 7, reading ......It cannot include any shifts, formation changes or interpenetrations and cannot contact any non-charging bases.

I have had another look at my photo example. If we take the LH away, the first contact by the Mtd. Xbow in their ZOI could be the friendly knights. If so, then no intercept can be delcared or declared - is that right? - no wheel and no contraction allowed.
The photo looks like a very close call to me.

The interception must either move into the path of the charge or be a flank/rear charge. So with no change of direction or formation it therefore cannot be allowed
