Problems with map editor

I just downloaded the editor but when I ran it I could only see the western map edge, and scroll up and down but not east-west. I though the problem might be with my version of Java as I haven't updated it for ages, so I downloaded the most recent version of that and now the editor won't run at all. Help!?

I un-installed the editor and re-installed it and now it runs but I am back to my original problem - I only have the up and down scroll bar on the RHS of the screen, not the box at the bottom with the options and controls etc. Still help!?

It runs in a window - is your desktop big enough for it. I'm not sure what the window size is off the top of my head. Maybe you need a higher desktop resolution?

I'm running at full resolution on my laptop, 1280 x 800. Should this be enough?

Yes, bro, that's plenty; I use it at 1024 x 768 with no problems.

OK, let me give you a checklist

1) are you sure you have the V1.04 editor? I know there current patch version is 1.06, but the latest editor is still V1.04

2) Have you copied the v1.06 version scenario files to the editor?

a) From C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Europe At War\data\scenario
b) Copy the six 19**.scn files and the ww2.map file
c) To C:\Program Files\Slitherine\CEAW Editor\ceaw_mapeditor\data

and then

d) From C:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Europe At War\data
e) Copy the ww2_city_eng.txt file
f) To C:\Program Files\Slitherine\CEAW Editor\ceaw_mapeditor\data

Note that although the files in step (b) and the file in step (e) come from two slightly different locations (the latter originating one directory up from the former), they both go to the same location in the editor. I mention this because it is somewhat counter-intuitive :)

3) have you downloaded and installed the java hotfix for CEAW v1.06?

4) If none of the above helps, what OS are you running?

5) If the answer to #4 is Windows XP, did you recently upgrade to service pack 3?

If you're not sure -

find the My Computer icon on your desktop
right-click it and choose Properties
On the General tab, which should be open by default, at top right it will look like this

Possum,

Thank you for your very detailed post! I have done 1) and 2) but it still won't work. I have tried to install the Java Hotfix but my copy of the game is not in the default folder and it won't accept the correct folder when I select it, it says the application is not there! I am running XP, on service pack 2.

Which version of the game do you have? Slitherine, matrix, a boxed version?

I have a Matrix Games version so the default folder it installed into is C:Matrix Games/Commander Europe at War, but the Java hotfix says the game isn't in there and won't install.

Matrix need to release their own Java hotfix. They have the files so maybe post a mail over there to remind them to release it.

Ian, I have just mailed them and will wait for the result. Thanks.

Jonny, something just occurred to me.

Can you try setting your desktop resolution to 1024x768 and seeing if that helps any? Johan said something elsewhere about the game running in 1024x768, and I just wonder if that slightly odd 1280x800 resolution is causing the problem.

Not that you should have to, or that it's a permanent solution, just to see if it works.

OMFG, hahahaha, oh jeez! Do you laugh or cry?

Glad it works, and there's one more weird damn little bug for Johan to worry himself about. We need, err, Slitherine needs, to add a note to the readme.txt file or whatever documentation comes with the editor, warning about this. Or maybe we need to make an FAQ.

Oh, hey, one hot tip on the editor. When you are editing Country data, after you change any of those numbers, you need to hit Enter after each change, to make the changes stick. If you just enter new data, then use your mouse to change to a different box, the changes don't stick. Mind, you have to save your scenario too, this is just a little oddity.
