Battle didn't start

After 2 failed attempts to attack (retreated because of my strong position), the Oda and Takeda engaged.

And the battle didn't start because since I was outnumbered I decided to have him come to me. He didn't...

... and I lost the battle with 0-0 casualties but did retreat from the province. Eh... I think there has to be something wrong. He did outnumber me but it's his task to push me out of the province not mine to attack him. How did he push me out if he didn't even move? Mystery. :)

The SP victory conditions dictate that a 0:0 draw is won by the AI. The campaign system does not accept a standoff - one side will always retreat.

You can assume that, overawed by the size of the enemy army, your army retreated when night fell.

Also, I would note that while you may have been outnumbered in absolute terms, you must have had more points worth of infantry than the AI (unless yours were on high ground, which it does not appear that they were) otherwise the AI would have attacked.

I am guessing that your troops were less numerous but higher quality.

The fact that it never attacked at all suggests that either (a) you were the invader, or (b) the AI was awaiting reinforcements.

Yes the AI was waiting for reinforcements and they did arrive but since neither side moved the battle wasn't actually fought. I was invaded and retreated.
I didn't like the result so I reloaded and fought the battle again... I took a savage beating. :)
