Frequent crashes

The game will periodically get into a state, usually during the AI move or during ship movement, in which it will crash -- I'll reload -- it'll crash -- I'll reload -- and eventually get through it.

I have XP SP3 (latest patches); 3.0 GHz Pentium 4, 1 Gb main RAM; NVIDIA GeForce 7900GS (256Mb) on a dual head system; desktop is 1280x1024x32 (on both); s/w is v1.06 of CEaW and I've installed the Java patch (not sure if I needed it).

It's frustrating if I haven't saved a game for a while (during a long move).

Any ideas?

I have just sent you a few saved games, any of which has led to a crash that dumps me to the desktop.

It doesn't seem to be related to windowed or full-screen; crashes both ways.

Good hunting!

Any luck? Any hope? Were the saved games I sent any use?

It's a great game, but it's unplayable right now on the 3 machines I've got here (all running XP SP3).

Not sure if the problems w/CEaW are related to SP3, but I've seen significant enough problems for it to warrant a mention. (Explorer crashes, extremely slow file deletes, ect...)

It has been my experience that every time MS releases a major update, it always screws up something in at least one game that I play.

Oh, and if you want a laugh? I just learned yesterday that in order to run at its full potential, Vista wants 4 gigs of RAM, plus a 2-gig dedicated flashdrive for its swapfile.

When I bought my new bawx I had a choice of XP Pro or Vista; I unhesitatingly chose XP Pro. And at least once a month since then I've had cause to be glad I did.

Someone wiser than me once said: Never buy an even numbered O/S from MS.
Think about it...
DOS 3... Stable
DOS 4... Shortlived
DOS 5... Last good DOS
Windows 2... Huh?
Windows 3... First useable version
Fast forward... Windows 7 is announced, so what does that make Windows Vista... "Number 6"? :p
I admit that Win98 sorta blows the curve though... It was last stable version of a 9x platform (WinME broke a lot of things from Win98). :)

Yeah, I think you made the right choice about XP Pro. Unfortunately a lot of my development tools don't run on Vista even now (I do a lot of embedded programming, so I have all kinds of weird compilers). :)

I agree, Win98SE was a rock. I ran it long after I should have upgraded to XP just because everything worked, and I was afraid to change.

My rule is never buy the first generation of any new Microsoft OS.

sorry SeniorLapiz but I was not able to load your saves. I do not know why. What OS did you use and where did you buy the game?

You mention that you are having problems on 3 different machines? Is there anything in common between them (virus checker, any other app) that might be something you could look at. It seems very odd that three different machines will all have trouble running the game in the same way.

Cheers
