Yes, that's right. After 6 months, it's working right, and I don't know whether to laugh, cry, or just be really really embarassed.

Fullscreen mode.

Yup, that's all, just turn it off and all the problems go away.

With or without the java hotfix, I toggle Fullscreen off and the game runs just as fast and smooth as any gamer could desire.

Sigh. I feel like such an idiot.

In all honesty, part of the problem is that there is no way to access the Fullscreen option from the Main Menu. You have to load a saved game or start a new one, then go to Options, where Save, Load, Quit and all that stuff is.

But, anyhow, problem solved. Now I can try my hand at multiplayer!

If I am not mistaken, you do not need to run the game to change this. You can edit the settings.txt in the main folder of CEaW. Just replace

WINDOWED_MODE 0

by

WINDOWED_MODE 1

Absolutely correct. I have no excuse for not thinking of this a long time ago.

Especially since we went through a round of thrashing about with this Fullscreen issue back in beta. But the problem had disappeared with the first retail release, and I just forgot about it.

v1.04 ran fine in Fullscreen mode.

That does make it sound like a problem with the vertical syncing on the video card. You might want to check that there isn't anything set in your advanced video card settings that might alter it.

But if you are up and running then that's great!

Pip, well, I went and looked at that. I have Vertical Sync set to "use the 3D application setting". Is that not optimal?

That is indeed the best setting. My guess would be some strange bug that is manifesting in your system. These things can be very had to fix - but at least you have found a workaround.
