Cavalry evasion

I'm fighting a battle with Ming vs Mongols and the amount of cavalry evading has taken me a bit by surprise since this capability wasn't present in P&S or P&S Campaigns although it is allowed in the FoG-R rules. Out of curiosity, why was cavalry evasion introduced in SJ and any chance it will be added in an update to P&S Campaigns?

The cavalry evasion code was in fact present in P&S but was disabled because we did not think it was necessary or benefited the simulation of European warfare of the period, even with Ottoman armies. They seem to manage well enough without.

With steppe tactics being a more immediate influence on east Asian continental warfare we decided to enable cavalry evasion in SJ.

As I say the code is already in P&S and could be activated by removing a few comment marks. We have no plans to do this, but any modder who wanted to try it could very easily do so.

As a general rule, non-melee cavalry can evade in Sengoku Jidai.

I thought it was all non lance cavalry can evade? So basically all cavalry but Japanese Yari Cav. Its probably the same thing since non yari cav are all pretty much archer/sword cav?

Is there some guidance on the chance on a unit evading? I know each unit gets a random + or -4 to its AP and the sums are compared, but does the facing of the charge matter? For example, I had lined up a rear charge (iirc) and the unit evaded me when I thought I had it for sure.

Units will always evade if attacked from the flank/rear.

They are unlikely to evade if you charge their front from very close, unless the close combat matchup is very bad indeed. (Because the risk of being caught in the back is high). The less AP the charging unit has when it reaches them, the more likely they are to evade because they should be able to escape.

And that's another very realistic thing... you basically don't even need to ask... just figure what would happen in real combat and the game does it. :)

As I said in the other thread... graphics are fancy but it's the substance that matters and this game has it.
