How small/big

So I got the books and some friends are showing intrest but Ill probably need to get 2 armies so they can test the game before they are sold on it.
800 points is a bit to much investment (money and painting, mostly painting) so I wonder if people have any idea of suitable size to get a fair test of the game. Me and my friends are expereinced gamers so we dont really need anything small for other reasons then time.
Also, do any armies work extra good/bad for test games. Im thinking about a celtic and a roman army (15mm) for my test games.

The starter armies are a perfectly good place to start. Play them on a 5 by 3 table (assuming 15mm) and you will get good competitive games. There are a goodly number of manufacturers producing FoG starter army packs now.
Celtic and Roman is a matchup that proably favours the Romans if inexperienced players are running the armies. The Celts need work to have much of a chance. I would suggest Roman and Carthaginian as that gives each side advantages and also has the spear vs sword matchup.

How big are the starter armies in points? Are they the same for everyone? I must have missed that in the books.

The stater armies are all 600 points (mostly 596-600 with a few as low as 592)

Other than Parthian which is 590 I believe (not that I am bitter...)

True, but it isn't easy to spend exactly 10 more points on a Parthian army. I suppose you could drop a BG of light horse and have some rubbish foot instead. I am not sure it would be a better force.

Hammy, I have tried it and it is worse using the extra 10 points that way.
