The Arzawan Chronicles by Lord Durham 04-2003

This particular game, though not as competitive as some of the others I've tried (read: spanked badly), at least allowed me to expand, both in territory and infrastructure. So, I figured it would be a good one to write up. I used the Anatolia Campaign and played on Normal Difficulty. To date I've played ten years.

Arzawa
Troy
As I sit on my throne in the city of Troy, waiting on a delegation of Mycenaens from across the sea, I think back to all I have accomplished in the past ten years. The gods have truly smiled on my people, and continue to do so.
A scribe sits near by, tablet and stylus poised. It is time to recount my tale - the rise to power of the Arzawan people.
I begin the tale in the year 1500BCE. At the time our lands consisted of two major settlements: Karabel and Troy. The census takers placed the populations at approximately 3650 inhabitants in Troy and 2200 in Karabel. The land of Arzawa itself has always been rich in Food, Building Materials, Copper and Wood - all commodities that would be of use for barter at a later date.
January 1500BCE - At the beginning of the year I instructed my Envoys to travel to the court of the Milawandans, to the south, and the Sardesans, to our east. My first decree was to establish a Reed Bed in Troy, and a Large Woodsman's Hut in Karabel. Building materials would be essential for a successful infrastructure. Finally, I ordered that one Peasant Levy be raised in each city.
March 1500BCE - Zeleia is an independent settlement to our northeast. Their people have raided our lands since I was a child. Therefore, I decided it was time to do something about them. I ordered elements of my armies in Troy and Karbela to rendezvous at the Zeleian border. The newly raised Peasant Levies would assume garrison duty.
April 1500BCE - The Reed Bed was completed in Troy to great fanfare. As the festivities died, I ordered the construction of a Basic Smallholding. One could never have enough food to feed the masses.
June 1500BCE - Early in the month I was shown a demonstration of the Javelin. I was pleased with its possibilities, and promised to build the proper facilities when time permitted. Meanwhile, I was informed that my two armies had united on the Zeleian border, under the command of General Niniziya. If the gods willed it, Zeleia would be mine.
July 1500BCE - The gods willed it. A fast rider delivered the news that Zeleia had fallen. A battle had been fought between the barbaric Zeleians and the heroic Arzawarns. As it was described to me, General Niniziya placed his 3 Hupshu Skirmisher units at the front of the line. Behind them, on a patch of rough ground, he placed one unit of the lightly armed Kheietj Auxilia. Flanking them were two units of Peasant Levies, and finally two units of Militia Spearmen, to protect the wings. The Skirmishers were ordered to hold position for as long as possible, while the units behind them were to advance through them once the enemy's assault had been softened. The strategy worked well, as it was related to me. The enemy was routed and many prisoners taken. Zeleia, with its abundant Copper Deposits, was now mine.
November 1500BCE - With the completion of the Woodsman's Hut in Karabel, I decreed that space for a Large Encampment be set aside. Construction on new tenements was to be started immediately. Meanwhile, in Troy, a call went out for Reed Gatherers. More Building Materials were sure to be required.
December 1500BCE - As the year came to an end, I reflected on the modest gains the Arzawa people had made. Our borders had increased, and relations with Milawanda and Sardes remained tolerant. I decided to raise another Peasant Levy in Karabel.
January 1499BCE - The year begins on a gentle note. It has been reported that our Harvest was average. I order the army to depart Zeleia and march to Karabel.
February 1499BCE - Construction in Karabel has finished, and it has grown into a Large Encampment. People flock to the expanded settlement.
March 1499BCE - Working closely with tradesmen from the west, we learn of the technology to produce metal-tipped spears. I am sure we will find a use for this knowledge.
April 1499BCE - The call for Reed Gatherers has been a success, and the production of Building Materials in Troy has reached an all-time high.
May 1499BCE - My next command in Troy is a call for Reed Brick Makers. Meanwhile, the groundwork for a Skirmishers Barracks is laid in Karbela. Finally, a Small Fort is ordered built in the frontier settlement of Zeleia.
September 1499BCE - The next few months are spent in calm reflection. I have decided that my southern border must be secured. During this time, the army under General Niniziya reached Karabel, rested, and marched south to the border of Milawanda. Next, I ordered the recall of my Envoy from their court. Finally, I ordered the army to invade.
October 1499BCE - The Milawandans were totally unprepared for our invasion. Victory was swift. Utilising the same tactics employed against the Zeleians, General Niniziya soundly defeated the overpowered Milawandan army. The country, and its rich, productive Gold Mines, was now a part of Arzawa. Our neighbours were not pleased. The Sardesans delivered a message, declaring us their worst enemy.
November 1499BCE - With our southern border secured, I have dispatched an envoy to the court of Sarhoyuki, a land near Sardes. Shortly after that, I am informed about the completion of the Small Fort in Zeleia, and the Skirmisher Barracks in Karabel. The year has been most productive.
Part II
January 1498BCE - The gods have graced our people with an unusually large harvest. They must be pleased with my efforts. Troy attracts Brick Makers to increase production. I arrange with the merchants to sell off surplus product, then import Tin, Gems, Horses and Incense,
February 1498BCE - Troy begins to attract more people. I arrange for the eventual expansion of my Capital into a Small Village.
March 1498BCE - A small army of Tribal Independents was spotted in the mountains to the east. It was assumed they would march on Zeleia. Troops are raised in Troy. However, the attack never materialized.
June 1498BCE - This month brings much celebration as Troy has evolved into a Small Village.
July 1498BCE - Word reaches me that Karabel attracts new people, too. I arrange for my second city to expand into a Small Village. After several months of resting and rebuilding, the army departs from Milawanda and marches on Kale.
October 1498BCE - Another Reed Bed is allocated in Troy to increase production.
November 1498BCE - Karabel successfully expands into a Small Village. A Homestead is allocated to produce more food. The Copper mines at Zeleia prove very useful. I decree deeper Excavations to increase production.
January 1497BCE - Our harvest is average this year. Meanwhile, the Homestead in Karabel is completed and food production is increased.
February 1497BCE - The Reed Bed in Troy is completed and becomes operational. The output in additional Building Materials becomes immediate. Copper production in Zeleia improves as the workers Excavate deeper into the ground. Finally, messengers report that the Independent City of Kale, with its vital Gold Mines, has fallen to our victorious army.
March 1497BCE - A carpenter approached us with the idea of improving The Wheel on our Battle Carts. He has been well rewarded for his ingenuity. Milawanda is attracting immigrants, and will soon reach the status of Large Encampment.
June 1497BCE - Additional land has been cleared, allowing a Large Encampment to be completed in Milawanda. News arrives that our army advances on the Tribal Independent City of Beycesultan, meeting no resistance. A Basic Smallholding is undertaken in Karabel to improve food output.
Sepember 1497BCE - The Basic Smallholding is completed in Karabel. Of more importance, a caravan carrying food (393) is captured near the city of Beycesultan. The prize is sent directly to our granaries. It has been brought to my attention that Milawanda has good ground for horse training. I have decreed that our first Onager Stables be constructed there.
October 1497BCE - Our growing territory begins to tax our food production. I have ordered a Small Wheat Farm to be constructed in my capital city of Troy to help meet this increased demand.
November 1497BCE - Glorious news. The Independent City of Beycesultan has fallen to our army. The foundation of a Homestead is placed to help feed the new citizens of our empire. Meanwhile, to secure our frontiers, a Small Fort is ordered constructed in the city of Kale.
January 1496BCE - We enjoy a good harvest - the gods smile once more. It is reported that the Onager Stables in Milawanda are ready to produce Battle Carts, while the Homestead in Beycesultan has become operational to help feed our people.
March 1496BCE - The Small Wheat Farm is completed in Troy. Immediately I decree that a Reed Gathering expansion be built to bolster our requirements for future Building Materials. The foundation for a Small Fort has been laid in Beycesultan to consolidate our borders.
April 1496BCE - The Small Fort in Kale has been completed and the garrison increased.
June 1496BCE - Milawanda continues to attract people. I authorize the necessary land be released to accommodate these immigrants.
July 1496BCE - The Small Fort is completed in Beycesultan. Our borders are strong.
August 1496BCE - Additional Reed Gatherers have been hired in Troy. I decide to look to the northeast to protect that frontier, and order my army, under the command of General Niniziya, to depart Zeleia for the Independent City of Sakarya. Word arrives that a caravan full of rare Gems has been spotted deep within Lukkan territory. I order a Gish Battle Cart to slip in, in an attempt to recover them. I realize I flirt with war.
October 1496BCE - It is reported that Milawanda has expanded into a Small Village. There is additional land for development, once the Building Materials have been delivered.
November 1496BCE - The utter balls! We have suffered an unprovoked attack by a small Sardesan army on the Frontier Settlement of Zeleia. However, the Arzawan garrison soundly repulsed the invaders and impaled their treacherous heads on stakes at the border. Sardes will pay for this infraction.
December 1496BCE - The caravan of Gems (218) has been reported recovered in Lukka, and is on its way back into Arzawan territory. The Lukkans apparently are none the wiser. Meanwhile, messengers inform me that General Niniziya has captured Sakarya. Sakarya is well known for their Horse Paddocks. It has been a good year.
Part III
January 1495BCE - The gods have graced us with another average harvest this year. It serves to mark the occasion as the foundation for the expansion of my capital of Troy into a Large Village begins.
February 1495BCE - Though it is yet early in the year, I order my army, under the command of General Mukimeli, to advance from quarters in Beycesultan toward Sardes. I have decided to make the Sardesans pay for their unprovoked attack on Zeleia the past year.
March 1495BCE - A Basic Horse Paddock completes construction in Sakarya. We now have a ready supply of fresh mounts. As we no longer need to import them, our merchants are free to pursue other opportunities. Messengers report a small army from Lukka, a land along the southern Anatolian coast, appears to be advancing north in the direction of Kale. Reinforcements are dispatched from neighbouring towns.
April 1495BCE - My fears are realized. The small Lukkan army invades Arzawan territory and assaults Kale. However, the reinforced garrison sends them reeling in defeat. In response, I decree that Infantry Barracks be constructed in Milawanda. Meanwhile, a cache of incense has been discovered near Keleia. Troops are dispatched to recover it. Toward the end of the month I recall my Envoy from Sardes.
May 1495BCE - The Envoy returns to Troy, and is immediately dispatched to the court of the Hittites. No sooner has he departed then great news arrives. General Mukimeli has conquered Sardes. I order their King flayed alive. Woe to the vanquished.
June 1495BCE - Construction in Troy completes, and my capital reaches the status of Large Village. Next, I instruct that a Reed Bed be established to increase the production of Building Materials. Plans are laid to expand Beycesultan into a Basic Smallholding. Finally, I dispatch an Envoy to the country of Pala.
August 1495BCE - I am informed that the Infantry Barracks has been completed in Milawanda. Meanwhile, I order a Reed Bed be built in newly conquered Sardes.
September 1495BCE - A Basic Smallholding is established in Beycesultun. However, of more importance is the introduction of a metal called Bronze - its strength will make our enemies quake in fear.
October 1495BCE - An additional Reed Bed has been completed in Troy. Meanwhile, the Royal Engineers develop new ways to dig deeper mines and build larger, sturdier forts. They are well rewarded for their efforts.
November 1495BCE - The Royal Architect produces plans to expand Karabel into a Large Village. The plans are approved.
December 1495BCE - A Reed Bed is established at Sardes, and the population is put to work producing more Building Materials.
January 1494BCE - Once again we have enough rain for an average harvest. My first order of the year is to expand the Infantry Barracks in Milawanda and produce more troops.
March 1494BCE - Word reaches me that a supply of Tin has been discovered near Sardes. I order some troops be dispatched to recover it, which they do.
April 1494BCE - With construction complete, Karabel expands into a Large Village. I decree that a Blacksmith be established in that city. Meanwhile, a Religious Cult has entered my lands, spreading unrest throughout the realm with their blasphemous teachings. They must be dealt with before my people begin to believe their nonsense.
June 1494BCE - Expansion is costly, so I scour the land for Reed Gatherers to work the Beds in Troy and Sardes.
July 1494BCE - The Battle Infantry Barracks are completed in Milawanda, and a formation of trained Swordsmen are immediately commissioned. Meanwhile, Sardes is on the verge of expanding into a Large Encampment as I continue to attract settlers and immigrants.
August 1494BCE - A Blacksmith is established at Karabel.
September 1494BCE - Through ruthless persecution I have eradicated the Religious Cult that infested my lands. Now I must repair the damage caused by their teachings. I raise wages to placate the population. Sardes grows into a Large Encampment. In a move to strengthen my northern frontier, I order the foundation of a Small Fort be laid in Sakarya.
October 1494BCE - I am successful attracting additional Reed Gathers in Troy.
November 1494BCE - To supplement our food production I order Small Wheat Farms begin construction in Karabel and Beycesultan. Meanwhile, Sardes successfully attracts Reed Gatherers to enhance our construction capabilities. The year draws to an end, and as I sit on my throne, I consider our growth and expansion to be satisfactory. Sardes has been absorbed into the Arzawan Empire, and there is the small matter of the Lukkans to deal with. I set about planning...
Part III
January 1493BCE - The gods must be angry - our harvest was weak this year. My army, under the command of General Niniziya, advances on Sarhoyuk. Envoys have informed me that the ruler of this land thinks unkindly of me, calls me an upstart. I will show him what kind of upstart I am.
February 1493BCE - A Small Fort has been built at Sakarya, providing a bulwark on the northeastern lands of my empire. Good news followed. While enroute to Sarhoyuk, the army under General Niniziya captured a substantial amount of wild horses. Using that as an omen, I decreed the Onager Stables in Milawanda be enlarged.
March 1493BCE - Small Wheat Farms were completed in Beycesultan and Karabel, substantially increasing food production for the citizens of Arzawa. As a prelude to war, I recalled my Envoy from Sarhoyuk. Finally, I ordered a Horse Paddock begun in Sakarya.
April 1493BCE - The production of Building Materials received a welcome boost as the city of Sardes successfully attracted additional Reed Gatherers. As my armies invaded Sarhoyuk, I dispatched an Envoy to the land of the Yalburtans. By the end of the month the country of Sarhoyuk had fallen to General Niniziya. He sent me the Royal Family's skins as a gift.
May 1493BCE - The gods continued to smile, considering the poor harvest I was graced with. A deposit of Tin was located near Troy. I dispatched troops to secure and deliver the precious commodity.
June 1493BCE - The month began on an ominous note. The Yalburtans ejected my Envoy, gouging out his eyes and returning him tied to the back of a donkey. I am sorely vexed by this barbarous act. In time, they will face my wrath. But, good news follows. The Horse Paddock is reported completed in Sakarya. Encouraged, I send an Envoy to the land of the Konyans. Meanwhile, Sardes begins expansion into a Small Village.
July 1493BCE - An uneventful month. The Onager Stables have been expanded in Milawanda.
September 1493BCE - I receive messengers informing me a small army from Lukka has attacked Kale. They have been defeated outside the walls. However, there are reports another army approaches. I think it is time I deal with my neighbours to the southeast.
October 1493BCE - Sardes develops into a Small Village. The residents are happy, and forget that they were once independent. My rule is benevolent. Meanwhile, a second small Lukkan army is destroyed outside Kale. I recall my Envoy in anticipation of war. Milawanda begins expansion into a Large Village, while Sardes begins construction on a Homestead. Food is becoming a problem to my people, and I must take action. I instruct the merchants to barter excess trade for more food.
November 1493BCE - I dispatch an Envoy to Thrace, a barbaric land far to my north. I wish to secure that frontier peacefully.
December 1493BCE - The Homestead in Sardes is established, relieving some of my ongoing food problems. Immediately I order it enlarged to a Basic Smallholding.
January 1492BCE - Like last year, the New Year begins ominously with another poor harvest. I do not wish to see my people starve. Fortunately, the month brings some good news. A small army operating near Patar discovers a cache of Building Materials. We immediately take possession. Construction of Livestock Holdings commences in Karabel and Beycesultan, while an Envoy is dispatched to the Kilistepans. Meanwhile, an army operating under General Hattusilus departs Kale and descends on a small Lukkan army near Parha, utterly annihilating them.
March 1492BCE - I have been informed that Milawanda has grown into a Large Village, while Sardes develops a Basic Smallholding. Sarhoyuk begins to expand into a Large Encampment. It is good to see my empire grow from within.
April 1492BCE - General Hattusilus assaults the Lukkan city of Patar. From all accounts the battle is a near fought thing, and could have resulted in defeat. Fortunately, the gods smile, and my general prevails. The Lukkan army is destroyed and Patar falls.
June 1492BCE - Our success against the Lukkans continue, and another army is defeated near Parha. So far they have assaulted us with small forces. So long as they remain disorganized, we should be able to subdue the large, rocky country with little trouble. The Livestock Holdings are completed at Beycesultan and Karabel, while Sarhoyuk grows into a Large Encampment. An Envoy is dispatched to the Kizzuwatna. A fierce battle is fought with the Lukkans near Parha. The result is victory, and General Hattusilus captures the defiant city. Not to be outdone, General Imbagal invades Yalburt and conquers the country after a hotly contested battle. I do not forget past slights, and have the Royal Family skinned alive.
July 1492BCE - While my armies add to the burgeoning Arzawan Empire, Troy itself expands - on the verge of growing into a Small Town.
November 1492BCE - A rich cache of wood is discovered near Garvukale. A Gish Battle Cart regiment is dispatched to oversee its retrieval. Meanwhile, Sardes is on the verge of growing into a Large Village.
December 1492BCE - In a rather surprising, and bemusing, turn of events, a small Lukkan army has appeared on the outskirts of Milawanda. Little do they realize that Milawanda is my chief supplier of all things military - the Lukkans are defeated rather handily.
January 1491BCE - The gods have smiled on my accomplishments. The harvest was average this year, and Troy has developed into a Small Town.
February 1491BCE - Sarhoyuk begins expansion into a small village. Meanwhile, it is reported that two large armies of Hittites are on the move to my northeast. It is the first time I have heard any word from these fearsome people since I dispatched my Envoy to their court.
April 1491BCE - I am disappointed, but pleased all the same. These Hittites have invaded my lands, but the city of Sarhoyuk has managed to hold off two large armies. My envoy to the Hittite nation has been recalled. Meanwhile, Kale has repelled an attack by a small Tribal army. Sardes develops into a Large Village, so I order the construction of a Reed Bed to increase the production of Building Materials.
May 1491BCE - This is an uneventful month, beyond sending an idle Envoy to the land of the Ishuwa.
June 1491BCE - Sarhoyuk expands into a Small Village. I decree that a Skirmisher Barracks be constructed there.
July 1491BCE - I continue to consolidate my empire, regardless of the hostilities perpetrated on me by the barbarous Hittites. Patar is encouraged to develop into a Small Village.
August 1491BCE - The Reed Bed is completed at Sardes. Immediately I put out the call for Reed Gatherers.
September 1491BCE - The Skirmisher Barracks have been completed in Sarhoyuk. I order the construction of a Reed Bed.
October 1491BCE - Patar expands into a Small Village, while plans are implemented to develop Yalburt into a Large Encampment.
December 1491BCE - The campaign against the Lukkans continues. After a hazardous winter march through the mountains, General Hattusilus succeeds in capturing the Lukkan village of Eflatunpinar.
January 1490BCE - We suffer yet another Poor Harvest. Perhaps I should sacrifice more lambs? Sardes is successful in recruiting additional Reed Gatherers. Meanwhile, to show the world that Troy is a city to be respected throughout the world, I order the construction of a University.
February 1490BCE - A Reed Bed is decreed for Sarhoyuk, while Yalburt develops into a Large Encampment. General Hattusilus reaches Karahuyuk, taking the city with little resistance. The Lukkans have been added to the Arzawan Empire, and are now but a memory...
Here ends the last known existing document chronicling the Arzawan Empire...
