Threatened Flank

In the manual, it states that foot units with a threatened flank suffer penalties when firing and when taking cohesion tests. However I haven't been able to find any definition for threatened flank. Can anybody clarify what exactly is a threatened flank? I am wondering about who can threaten, how far away can they be and threaten, can a unit in melee be threatened, what about a kiel without flanks? Thanks.

A unit has threatened flank if there is an enemy unit that could carry out a flank/rear charge on it next turn. Non-lights ignore lights. Keils and tercios ignore potential flank threats in the same way as actual ones.
