Does the game change the difficulty setting by itself?

I have been playing on Lieutenant-General for some time, when I noticed that I was on Captain-General, although I was sure that I had never changed it myself. Since then I have often reset the game back to Lieutenant-General, but after a few games I notice that it has gone up to Captain-General again! The reason that I notice is that the quality of my units goes down on Captain-General, for instance from Average to Below Average.

I don't think it changes by itself but after a few victories it will suggest to increase.
You might have accepted to increase by accident.

I don't remember anything like that, but I will keep a close eye on it in future.
