Performance Issue: Massive slow down/hanging.

Background: Old Computer, game worked 100% fine.
New computer (i5 quad core, GTX970, basically gaming rig) game works = 100% fine.

Until recently actually, I started up the Grand Campaign '39, and on two occasions now, I've had the game slow to an utter crawl. The map doesn't move, edge scrolling is disabled, everything is super slow. It is like I have to reboot the game completely in order to get it back to working normally. - Loading a save doesn't fix it, I actually have to shut the game down completely.

I've no idea what the cause is, first time it happened it started at the end of the opponent's turn. Second time, I just left the computer for a few minutes, came back and it started hanging.

Any ideas? I'm not sure how I'd go about trying to replicate the error. Though, second time it happened I hit up task manager and nothing really stood out, there wasn't a memory issue or anything that I could see, which is really weird cos usually that would be the first place any issues would pop up imo...

EDIT:

Just to note; This issue has NOT affected the main game, Allied Corps or Soviet Corps. It has ONLY appeared for the GC '39 thus far. I've been playing Soviet and Allied Corps pretty intensively recently and basically, zero issues there.

lets take a look under the hood to be sure,

https://help.ea.com/uk/article/how-do-i ... nistrator/

How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8 )
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments (zip) rather than pasted into the body of the post.

add the exe of the game to your Anti Virus and firewall program, to make sure check the logs of these to see if it was one if any of them was to blame.

That usually means a 3rd party program, like an Internet security programs, is or could be interfering with the game or update installation.

run the game from a admin account and use full admin permissions.

please make sure all game pre requisite are installed with the game, even if you think or fully know there are already installed, it will only over write, and it may be that you have a older or newer version of these where as the game in question may need a certain version.

please make sure you are running the latest game version and have up to date drivers installed on your pc,

If you have the original version. So you'll need to update it from the Internet.
Please note that you'll only need the last update, as the updates are comprehensive. (not needed with steam)

I have exactly the same problem, but with soviet corps.
After some random playing time the game slows down exactly like RVallant described.
This seems to me like some form of memory leak or something in the game uses up all resources.
If this happens i save the game, quit and restart, which solves the problem.
I get this problem maybe 1 till 3 times during a mission - it is only acceptable due to the very fast loading time of the game, so i can save, quit, restart, load in under 20 seconds...

I've played Africa Corps and the grand Campaign on the same PC without any problems, but that was some time ago.

You can find my dxdiag attached, please let me know if i can be of any further assistance or provide additional information regarding this problem.

cheers
Lunex

It is all done through Steam. No conflicts (or there shouldn't be) with Anti-virus. All drivers should be up to date, NVIDIA automatically updates anyway, think the last update was the other day! :)

If it helps any, I have it on D Drive not C - C = my SSD and D being the conventional drive.

I've followed your instructions and renamed the folder.
I now have no Audio in the game now but the slowdown occured after playing maybe 20 minutes again, non the less.

Are there any other means to provide debug information for me?

cheers

There's no debug function available in the game nor any log file.
Are you playing with any mod?

Wait, I am wrong. It started in GC 39, and now I am on 40... It continues...
I think no issue when it was just Soviet Corps.

Try using the /nocache switch as it's explained in this forum thread:

Same issue with me, massive hanging, ever since I installed Soviet Corps I don't get more than a few turns in before it's uncomfortable to play. (I'm still playing Grand Campaign '43, and will finish before I go on to Soviet Corps).

I have swapped video drivers since it first occurred fwiw, no change.

I cannot find the game file on this computer to make a new shortcut, although I did create a duplicate shortcut which when accessing properties does not show a target as shown on the link.

It's installed through Steam as well, so maybe an issue there?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Windows 10 64bit Dell 8700 tower.

To find where is PanzerCorps.exe on a Steam installation do the following:
Right click on the game in your Steam games library and select Properties.
Click on Local Files tab and click on Browse Local Files button.

Thank you for that, I have followed the instructions and will now test it, hopefully the fix will make everything good again.

What a wonderful game!

Hi guys!

When this issue happens again, could you please open Task Manager and check how much memory PanzerCorps.exe is using? Even though there can be enough free memory on the PC, 32-bit process can only use a certain amount, and if we hit the ceiling, a problem like this might happen.

Rudankort wrote:(...)check how much memory PanzerCorps.exe is using?(...)
The problem occured to me again, despite using the /nocache parameter.
The "PanzerCorps.exe" was using about 500mb RAM at this time, so theres quite a lot left to the 3,2gb 32 bit limit.

thanks non the less for your support!

cheers

Well just come on and seen the following posts from my last, my experience having used the /nocache is similar to before but not quite as bad.
I will have a look see at the memory usage when I am next on which will be tomorrow.
Thanks for all the helpful posts none the less.
