How to attack enemy subs?

I have pinged and found an enemy sub - while sending a DD in to attack it, it ran into another enemy sub, at that point I was allowed to attack it so I did. Now I can see 2 enemy subs on my screen but I don't seem to be able to attack them with anything, not with air bombers, air torpedos, not with ship guns nor ship torpedos. What am I missing? Are visible subs literally not hittable? I can't run into them again because now I can see them. How do I hit them?

DD near them has to use sonar, even if they are already discovered. There appears to be no other option.

The rule is, ping first, find enemy sub within range, then attack. OR move, run into enemy sub, then attack. Your first DD was lucky enough to do the latter. Unfortunately, every other DD must ping first to find the sub on its own before firing. If it's within range, that is. It cannot just sail over and attack a sub that another DD has located. And if it moves first, it cannot ping to find the sub. That's what makes sub-hunting so difficult.

One other thing. As far as I know, only destroyers and light cruisers can attack submerged subs, using depth charges. Other ships and planes cannot fire at a submerged sub with guns or torpedoes.

A sub may fire on a surfaced sub. Won' t destroy the sub but you will knock it down to a 9 from a 10. :D
