Light Foot in Pursuit

Had an odd one come up last night and the rules seemed to give to contradicting answers.

A BG of 6 LF were uphill on a steep hill in CC with a BG of 4 LF. Madness we know but there was a plan when we started it :)

So behind the downhill LF traversing along their back, 2 MU away, is BG of Elephants. The downhill LF broke and ran back off the hill, and swung past the elephants. The uphill enemy LF pursued. And here it got tricky.

Pursuit suggested they contact the elephants and combat was resolved in the next impact. But I though pursuit was considered a charge for the next impact if they hit in the previous turn. But LF cannot charge non-lights in the open, even in the flank. But the pursuit rules say a pursuit contact is adjudicated in the next impact. But is that a charge ? Because LF cannot .... blah blah blah and so on.

In the end the uphill BG decided not to pursue anyway so it became academic.

But the question is, is a pursuit contact that is to be resolved in the next impact phase a 'charge' and therefore must obey the charge rules ? Or is it just a pursuit that gets played out in Impact ?

Don't pursuing skirmishers stop 1 MU short of troops they are not ordinarily allowed to charge? Have foolishly left rules at home but I think this is what happens...

The actual rule states:

Pursuers normally contact any fresh enemy in their path. However, skirmishers can choose to halt their pursuit 1 MU away from fresh enemy non-skirmishers. If they do so, all their front rank bases stop on that line.

So in theory the light foot could have hit the elephants in the flank (not causing a drop in cohesion).
They would have 2 dice hitting on 3's, and the elephants would turn to face, having 4 dice hitting on 5's.
Assuming that the elephants didn't die at impact, they would then turn round and stomp all over the LF during the melee phase.

Got it, thanks.

So a pursuit into contact is not a charge but but is an impact combat next impact phase. All charges are impact, but not all impacts are charges...

Yes. UNLESS the pursuit occured in the impact phase and the pursuit contacts a fresh enemy. In which case the impact combat is resolved in the current impact phase. Happened in my game against Terry at Helsinki.
