Normans

Guys
Just inherited a large force of 28mm Normans, I would like to use them just now so I have tried to manufacture a temporary list that would be acceptable until the DA book comes out.
I have tried to mix the DBM Book 3 list 51 (Normans) with the Swords & Scimitars Early Crusader lists.
Is there a way to show the info as a table?

Norman Circa 1066 (When else!!!)
C in C Inspired Commander/Field Commander/Troop Commander 80/50/35 1
Sub Commanders Field Commander 50 0 to 2
Troop Commander 35 0 t0 3

TROOP NAME TROOP TYPE CAPABILITIES Pts PB Bases PBG TOTAL BASES
Type Armour Quality Training Shooting Close Combat
Milites Knights Armoured Superior Undrilled Lancer,Swordsman 20 4 TO 6 4 to 36
Spearmen Heavy foot Protected Average Undrilled Defensive Spear 6 6 TO 8 0 to 16
Archers Medium Foot Unprotected Average Undrilled Bow 5 6 TO 8 0 to 16
Light Foot 5
Crossbowmen Medium Foot Protected Average Undrilled Crossbow 6 4 TO 6 0 to 6
Unprotected 5

Any additions/ideas/criticism gladly accepted.

The chief question is whether the milites in this period are cavalry or knights. I suspect the former

The crusaders of 1099 are knights, I hope the normans are the same troop.

I wasn't sure about the Milites classification either, but as they are classed in DBM as KN(F) and I read elsewhere on this forum that they shall be classed as cavalry up to 1040 and as knights thererafter, I thought it would be safe bet to go for the knights option in the 1066 campaign.

There is an entry in the DBM list for LH scouts which I am not sure about though so I have just including them as lesser armoured Milites maybe filling back ranks or something similar.

I have to agree...

It would seem odd that the same troop type would be cavalry in 1066, only to fight significantly better only 33 years later...

IIRC RBS stated on the mailinglist that Norman Milites will be Cv till 1041 (and presumably Knights afterwards).

Have played 4 or 5 games now using my retrained (into formations) DBM/DBMM EIR army. The rules are making sense and I am having more fun in Ancients!

FOG has inspired me to paint a Perry Brothers Norman army hence checking these Forums, and finally registering so I can reply and ask a couple of questions.

I too am using the Crusades list as a basis for a Norman army. My questions relate to light foot and light horse?

Will the Norman list have an archer option for light foot and medium foot?
Will the Norman list have Breton or other european light horse with bow or spear?

Any indications would be greatly appreiciated although the speed I paint the army list will be out before my army....meh....

Yes, I'd like to know this too.

I'm hopeful that there will be some LF archers in either the Norman or Anglo Norman list(s) but I'm fearing the worst. Possibly there will be LF incorporated into HF Spearmen BGs in the Anglo Norman period? Mainly wondering because I'm "demoing" with this army and would like to get it right or know that I'm doing it wrong.

As for the Bretons or other light horse, I really don't anticipate any bows. My guess is either lance/swd or jav/lt.spear.

FWIW I used an "early" Cilician Armenian army, which is basically DBM Normans but with Cv Lancers, this weekend and found they were surprisingly effective.

The tradeoff between undrilled Cv and Kn is not totally one sided - greater maneuverability (especially on CMTs) and less points vs more dice and better impact factors is worth considering . 8)

I think this will be a popular conversion.

You can take the lancers as knights too.

What seems better to me tho are the various foot options that you can't get with an Early Crusader.

There will be some light foot bow allowed in the Norman list.

Sorry if I press too hard, but by "some" do you mean one BG or more?

I'll cut to the chase: I've got 18 stands of LF Archers that used to be Ps(O) supporting Sp for the Anglo Norman list in DBM. Will they be of use to me when the appropriate FoG lists are released?

I haven't been party to any list development stuff at all, however gazing into her crystal ball my friend Mystic McMeg tells me its a safe bet that at least one or two early medieval lists where the poorer pedestrians wear vaguely Norman-style dress will include a possibility for 3 units of 6 LF, Bw.

In S&S already, Cilician Armenian allows you to have up to 40 for instance, middle Serbian up to 56, Cypriot up to 30.... :)

Whether 3 units of 6 Bw will be of any use to you is another matter

True dat

(no, I really don't talk that way)

This is all helpful information because I'm at a basing crossroads.

I'd explain in detail, but it would fall under the category of "time you'll never get back."

Many thanks tho, this has saved me lots of time.
