I select player in the starting options but if I buy a certain unit I sometimes get 2 or 3 other units that I did not buy?

All the army lists have compulsory units representing the typical types in that nation's army. So while you have a choice of which units you raise, it is not a completely free choice. Otherwise you could raise all your armies consisting of one rare unit type by raising multiple "forces" in a province in the same turn.

If you look at the force selection screen when you are raising an army, you will see the compulsory types near the top of the left hand column.

No announcements have been made as yet.

But you can raise special regional troops in some places - like the doughty Cornishmen, so it's not exactly the same "core" component.

Unfortunately Apple does not accept 32bit programs anymore. Rewriting P&S to 64bit is a lot of work.
