I AM PAINTING KHMER:CHAMS infantry
and don't know what to paint on small and large shield. Anyone has idea of historical shield drawings?
second point: how should i base them HF or MF or LF? i know the list is not published, i don't ask to have it before the others but i'd like to base them so i can move forward and paint new figs.

I suspect that most of the infantry will be MF.

Nik may be right about most of them being MF.
In reegards to shield patterns, some sources indicate that good luck and protection sysmbols may have been common. Writings from other countries indicate that village affiliation or vassal alligence symbols MAY have been used as well. But the evidence is less conclusive on the alligence symbols.
Such pgood luck and protection symbols were painted on Elephants legs as well. (It is still a practice to paint elephant legs with good luck or religious symbols during modern festivals in Java and in some other Soytheast Asian countries as well.

when i painted mine i went for simple geometric patterns as well. that type of painting seems common to most cultures. the great thing about these more obscure nations is that you can pretty-much do as you like!
otherwise, refer to indus valley schemes. south-east asia was heavily influenced by the indian cultures.
and, the troops will likely *all* be MF

I'd be surprised if there weren't some LF in there as well - but a minority.

In the modern festivals, the color of the paint was used to represent land-water-sky spirits.
I saw in pictures of those festivals traditional sun, quarter moon and star patterns. Interesting ones were blue wavy lines which i took to mean river spirits and tree looking symbols.
