Provinces falling to from 5 to 2,3 or zero without explanati

On top of this most of my provinces, which a couple of turns ago were level 5, are now levels 2,3 and some cases zero, with absolutely no mention to me of this happening, and no explanation as to how it happened.
EDIT - not sure about what caused this - could have been some kind of random event, but i don't think it was plague in this case as when i was aevinwode i tried to reload when there was plague in any of my provinces (might have missed some though and be wrong).
Pretty rare at any rate - playing as sonneneve instead of Aevinwode now and nothing similar and been playing them ages
