Another thing the game is lacking is flyers - griffons, manticores, dragons etc - there should be far more of them (though not so keen on the Fantasy General 'bombardier' class which seemed to basically be World war II bombers with different graphics). As in FG they could remain vulnerable to archery so some game balance is retained.

Fliers are common in some realms, and completely absent in others. Each realm has a unique culture, which is partially reflected in its unit composition. We did not opt for a "flier class," as in FG bombardiers. Rather, the ability to fly is a unique ability that should be exploited and enjoyed if your realm is lucky enough to have a flier or two. And if your realm doesn't have any, your probably have some units with other some unique abilities that those flying realms wish they had.
