How do I decode how damage is calculated?

Okay, so I found the battle report option on the iPad version that decodes the modifiers and dice rolls, but I don't have a clue how this is all calculated and where to begin?
I want to have a better understanding of the game so I can improve, and it seems this is crucial. How do I break this data apart and how do I approach understanding how damage and modifiers are calculated?
Thanks for any help you can provide!

So I looked over then posts about initiative, but I still don't really understand the process for how damage is calculated at all... Does anyone know of the step by step process or have an example?

There is several threads about it. Read carefully all of them
Personally, I do not understand all the details but I don't care - it doesn't prevent me from enjoying the game and winning battles (currently playing SS-GTPG campaign on General difficulty level).

I would add that the key things to learn are:
- how "close" and "open" types of terrain work/affect combat calculations
- that the effective initiative can be capped by certain terrain types
- to plan carefully before attacking entrenched units and fortified cities
Also, in bad weather (rain/snow/sandstorm) all units initiative is set to 1 if I remember correctly, so things kind of even out.
