Old Grognard Baffled?

Yes this Old Grognard is at least temporarily Baffled.

Saw so many great comments had to buy the game. Yes the AI is good almost too good as it seems to easily react quicker, better and with great ability to destroy. :|

So far game is love/the for me. Maybe I should read the rule book instead of jumping in after tutorials?

Things hard to adjust too:

Often not being able to move even one square only option may be turning one spot.
Not being able to move or turn at all if in melee. Yes if you were flanked you stay flanked each and every turn.
Great difficult moving into position related to first comment above. From as little as two squares away it can take several turns between turning and moving to finally be able to attack (if the AI hasn't attacked your moving unit already " they sure seem to be much more able at moving and turning quickly.
Tired of low morale or quality troops losing many per turn while the AI unit loses little.

I played the first two 30yr Historical scenarios and on pretty low difficulty won after several tries. Since I haven't been able to win any scenarios as my army always breaks first.

Glad I bought in. It is fun and challenging, but this poor baffled old guy needing to learn new tactics or may lose interest I suppose.

Any great strategy and tactics out there you can suggest?

I learned the most by first trying the historical scenarios on my own on middle difficulty.

If I failed I would read some after action reports to see how others defeated the AI (search the entire forum for a keyword from the battle name).

If that failed after a few tries I would then drop the difficulty down one notch and try again.

It is a pretty good learning curve but you'll pick it up.

The historical scenarios are not necessarily balanced. I suggest that you practice using skirmish battles. The turning rules take some getting used to, but let's face it, units would not realistically present their flank or rear to an enemy threat. Later, you may even learn how to use this to your advantage.

Tips:
Turn on detailed combat reports.
Study the "POA" system so that you know what works.

Yes. Do skirmish a lot. It's more balanced than the historical scenarios.

Richard, the developer, is a sadist in his scenario design philosophy. He says "what use is a scenario that you can beat 100% in Normal and Hard level?"
A word of encouragement. Medium difficulty is not for everyone. My win percentage is about 60% vs AI in skirmish. Much worse in historical.
Don't be ashamed to lower the difficulty level. You will still find them challenging and somewhat historical.

If you would like to play a two-player game, where I would offer my advice, I would be happy to do so.

Anything fine, I'll leave it to your expertise to pick something that you think will work well. I'm more active on Matrix forum but on both and if you want password protected you should be able to PM or email me.

Thanks

That was a good game and I hope that it was helpful. If you want to play the same game, but swap sides just let me know. I think that would be better for you that a completely different set of armies. There was nothing drastically wrong with your play. You just need more experience to recognize the capabilities of a unit by reading the in-game description and relating that to the Impact POA and Melee POA tables. It is also important to know that cohesion tests decide the game. The tactics that work in a different era do not readily translate to the Renaissance.
