Limiting LOS - How Accomplished

This may have been posted elsewhere but would like understand how LOS works for when dealing with forested areas.
I am sure to be confusing in this explanation but most part it seems that units in a forest hex could be hit by direct (or suppressing) fire only if hex was open on side of incoming fire. I have on occasion experienced where I have unit with multiple forested hexes but still get hit by a direct fire round such a tank HE round).
If I understand distance setup in BA/BA2 a second hex would be be in order of 300meters? Know maybe that is possible but I wanted how this is setup? to allow for it and to block LOS.
thanks,
DCoffin
