I was admiring the Celtic cavalry and then noticed that they weren't using stirrups. I thought they did.
It might seem a small point (and it is) but it would be a shame if this were an oversight.

I might be wrong but I thought the stirrup wasn't used in western Europe till around the time of Hastings.

Most scholars credit the Avars with introducing the iron stirrup to Europe, so it's highly doubtful the celts knew, much less used them. Leather stirrups might have been known slightly earlier (possibly introduced by the Huns) but these were usually only aids to get on the horse and not used while riding.

Ah, yes. (Wish I hadn't mentioned anything now

)
Nice figures though, the position of the riders seems quite accurate for stirrupless horsemen. (I used to ride without stirrups.)

IIRC the earliest possible illustration of a stirrup is around the end of BC start of AD from India or somewhere close - but it is a bit dubious I think.

THE CELTS USED A SADDLE WITH FOUR HORNS, WHICH SORT OF GRIPPED AND ENCLOSED THE THIGH, THE ROMANS THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT BECAUSE THEY COPPIED IT.
