where to buy and sell figurines/BG/army?

i know ebay, does anyone knows better place?

Wargames Forum...bring and buy section is pretty good for selling but you might have to wait a while before you can find something you like...you could always put a request in and see if someone responds?!...and it's free to adverstise too!

I tend to buy painted figures on bring and buy stalls at wargames shows but that is I think very much a UK thing.

Unpainted there are plenty of manufacturers

Ebay is not a bad place in terms of size of audience but possibly better for selling rather than buying as prices can be rather high.

Larger US conventions often have flea markets which serve a similar function. But they're usually better if you're shopping for a good deal on figures rather than if you go looking for something very specific.

The small conventions I've been to around here (Ohio) all seem to have a flea market where you can sell your stuff as well. Also you might try your local store where people game. There is a hobby store about an hour from where I live where people go to play various wargames and its always a good place to find someone who wants to get rid of an old army and start a new one.

This brings up a question, I was wondering about some of the differences between gaming in the US vs. the UK. A friend of mine told me in the UK game conventions are more of a place to watch people game or game with your own armies rather than join games other people have set up for you and was wondering if this was true. Now my friend probably hasn't been to a UK game convention in decades so he might be a bit out of date or it might have just been his experience.
In the US when you go to game convention you don't need to bring anything, you just walk around, look at some games that look interesting to you and someone usually asks if you want to play and gives you some figures to use. The more formal ones there might be a sign up sheet to play the game, again where they provide everything for you to use. It allows you to learn different rules systems, play different genres, etc.

In the UK there are two main styles of event with shades of inbetween.

At one end of the scale there is the show that is all trade stands, demo games and a few participation games, Salute is the biggest of these. At the other end is a pure tournament where there is no trade and just competition games that players bring armies for and preregister such as the Challenge.

In the middle you have events like Britcon and Warfare which are mixtures of the two.

If you want to play a game at a tournament then you have to bring your own toys. If you are looking for something different then the demo games at the trade type shows are a good way to get a game. Most of these demo games tend to be short and unusual, Santa Claus fighting killer penquins is one that springs to mind.

What there is not at present is tournaments where armies are provided and players just turn up and play with what is there.

U.S. conventions tend to be broad, mixing everything including the kitchen sink and often a variety of types of gaming. This is probably because it's a lot easier to draw enough people to specialized conventions with over 60 million people crowded onto an island the size of Kansas.
