Some of my old DBM friends dragged me out of five year "no lead" phase and said I had to check out this rule set. Flipping thought he rulebooks I'm very impressed with how they are laid out and presented so I put in an Amazon order for the rulebook and the Greek/Macedonian book (these have not come in yet).

So I have dusted off my trusty old Maks, broke Alexander out of his sarcophagus and am ready to learn some new rules and poke people with some 18' pikes.

As I have 90% of the figures I think I should need to make a fairly large Alexander list, my brain is immediately thinking a second army would be nice, and maybe a third, fourth, fifth...

It seems allot of the local people are playing Mid. lists so I was thinking about 100 Years War period Brits (assuming that is covered in a book yet) and maybe Frenchies to go along with them. Are these lists represented yet, and if so how are they playing? Something about a horde of pretty knights in bright colors seems like it would be impressive galloping across the board, but I don't want to hose myself if the list is to challenging or stinky.

I'm also curious where an ancient Thai or Burma list might be, as I have been studying Muay Thai kickboxing for awhile and figured it would be fun to at least have a few dozen bases of an army where I study a modern form of their historical fighting arts. Any historical resources for Thai/Burma military history would be great as well as it is certainly something I am not well versed in.

Any other newbie advice would be greatly appreciated as well as my army book has shipped, but my stupid rulebook has not so I figure I'll get the army book this week and the rule book a week after.

Welcome back to the world of lead

There is a 100 years war English list, it is in the suplement "Storm of Arrows" along with French and all sorts of other late European goodies.

Thai and Burmese lists are not done yet but there will be suplements including them, probably some time in 2009. It really depends on the release schedule from Osprey.

As to newbie advice, this forum is a good place to start. Look at the AAR section for some very good battle reports and eye candy and the rules section for rules queries.

Once you get your ruleset, best thing is to get stuck in trying a few skirmishes, even solo, just to experience the interactions and how things work...maybe 300/400 pt gamettes with five or six battlegroups a side. It's easy to get the hang of the basics if you've wargamed with ancients before. Ask any questions on this forum, however basic, and you'll get a quick and helpful answer, at least that's my experience!

Join up with local enthusuiasts and try games of about 600/650 pts...you have about 10 battle groups per side then and three players a side, each playing a general is a lot of fun. Another good point is don't try to rush games to a finish, look stuff up (download the index available from the "online resources" section of the FOG homepage) and write down queries as they arise to ook up later or post on the forum.
