Pursuit moves and non-appearing artillery

Rant mode on:
Can someone explain why units that are pursuing routed units do not charge into the unit the rout has uncovered but instead choose to to take convoluted paths that invariably end with their flank exposed to an enemy unit. I just lost 3 units this way in one bound. Surrounding units went down in morale and my opponent ripped a hole in my line. Game over as it wasn't worth playing any longer.
I understand that lighter units may not charge heavy ones, but Spahis ignoring Winged Hussars?
Also my Ottomans started with no artillery on the table. Several moves in a unit of medium guns appeared on my baseline. I've had this happen before, in another game they appeared on the baseline in a lake. Still shot though
These were 2800 plus points games so is there a points level we should stop at to prevent this?
Rant mode on hold.

regards
Brent

Yes my Winged Hussars had a great time BBJ.......
Also my artillery arrived on my base edge during M1 and never fired a shot all game.
I think the pursuers head for the easiest target that the AI spots.

Pursing troops are not under control, they are assumed to be mostly focused on the routers they are pursuing.

They will charge a weaker target close to their path, but only if they have sufficient AP left to do so. If they do not have enough AP to charge the new target, they turn to follow the routers, which may often result in them presenting a flank to other enemy.

Pursuing spahis would be unlikely to charge winged hussars anyway (unless they would hit their flank) as the hussars would normally easily win against them.

The main reason for having multiple lines of cavalry was to deal with victorious enemy squadrons that broke through the front line.

The maximum number of units per side in a battle is 64. Artillery and their limbers count as 2 units. I suspect that you hit the 64 unit limit with your artillery, and this caused the anomaly when the game tried to limber them. We will look into this issue for a future update, but in the meantime I suggest slightly smaller battles.

Thank you for both answers.
