Increasing legate XP

Hi all
Can anyone provide some tips on increasing the amount of XP your legate gains?
I have played about 6-7 battles of the Roman campaign and my legate has fairly woeful XP compared to my other units. Sometimes he fights another unit for a whole battle and manages to gain 0 XP for his troubles.
Sometimes he manages to make several kills without gaining any XP. Anyone know of an effective tactic to boost his XP?
Thanks

Methods: Wrap him up in another unit, and send him into the front lines.
Countercharge the enemy in the rear with him

Thanks. That seemed to work.
I also upgraded his weapons so he had a bit more killing power and was more easily able to gain XP

When things permits, chase him routed enemy infantries.
Ordering him to go enemy direction makes Legate trample enemy troops from behind.
And send Legate early in combat, and once in contact, put on disengamement button, and let enemy troops to chase after
Legate. And then engage again. If battlefield terrain permits, Legate can trample several enemy individuals at a time without suffering any damage.
In singleplayer mode, put on keyboard space key makes immediate stop, freeze everthing, so this can be help.

We do think that legate XP is a little too rare and tricky to gain, so we may well be making it a little easier to obtain in any future patch. Though not too much, we do like to make you work a little

Your Legate gains 0 XP from bashing on poor peasants and low-level skirmies. The only way to get any decent points is to set him in the midst of your cav unit and go after the high-value targets, especially the opponent's cav. Outflanking and hitting a heavy unit from behind by his lone self is another way to rack up points, but it is risky. If your unit facing the enemy head-on routs, the entire melee will suddenly center on your poor Legate, who will fight valiantly and rack up all sorts of points before being unhorsed and butchered by the angry masses of foot sloggers.
Note that there is no way for your Legate to gain XP in the first battle against those pesky peasants, and it isn't worth the effort in the second battle, since the only unit worth points is in rough ground.

Ave honvedseg,
Did you know -
your Legate is one of the few troop types (perhaps the only one) that can fight on any terrain without being disadvantaged?
My Legate managed to kill 5 of the blighters, on that second map, and he was rewarded with a massive 9 xp.

I bought a download version of Arena a few days ago, I assume recent downloads have the patch built in. In my first campaign, my Legate advanced to level 53, far higher than any other unit. I can only assume legate experience WAS tweaked in the patch.

First off, congratulations to everyone at Slitherine; Legions Arean has the potential for a long run as the "best in class" for battle simulations. Having grow-up poring over battle maps, the game is a real blast.javascript:emoticon(':D')
Regarding legates, it seems like there should be a separate method for legates gathering experience, something defined by one's achieving of the victory conditions rather than by crashing into the melee. The current system requires one to deploy legates in an unrealistic fashion. Instead of overseeing the battle from the rear, then wading into the fray to bolster up a flagging unit or to help punch through a breach, players are rewarded for sending the legates out to ride out with the cavalry to trample down the militias in seek of XP. Hopefully Slitherine will take this into account in new versions of the game.

Thanks for the feedback - in fact this has already been done in the latest PC version. I think you have the Mac version and they are not as up to date. If they release an update patch you'll see this fix.

Yes, I have now updated my MAC version of LA with the Freeverse CofM expansion pack. You are right, the legate does seem to be receiving XP differently. Thanks, this is a good improvement. Not that I'm a opposed to a mighty charge with the troops.
